Our community lost a dedicated doctor, sister, mother, grandmother, and friend. Patrice Ann LeMonde, known professionally as Dr. Patrice Knight, passed away suddenly but peacefully on February 2, 2022, at 67 years of age.
She was born in Paramus, New Jersey to Charles “Chuck” and Anella LeMonde on April 22, 1954. During her teenage years, the family relocated to Huntsville, Alabama, where she graduated from Butler High School in 1972. She went on to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming a pediatrician, completing her undergraduate studies at Auburn University and her doctorate at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine.
After finishing her pediatric residency in Birmingham, Dr. Knight returned to Huntsville where she completed a fellowship in neonatology. She served the Huntsville community through pediatrics and neonatal intensive care at Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children. Additionally, she was an associate professor and eventually became chair of the Department of Pediatrics at UAB School of Medicine’s Huntsville Regional Medical Campus. She retired in 2020, leaving a legacy of contributions to the medical community.
Patrice was preceded in death by her parents, Chuck and Anella LeMonde, and her brother, Gordon LeMonde. She is survived by her children, Alana Coker (Matthew), Charles William “C.W.” Knight, and Hallie Smith (Graham), her granddaughter, Elsie Smith, her sister, Deborah LeMonde, her niece, Christa Kuhn (Alfred), and her loyal companion, Don Counter, as well as numerous friends and colleagues.
Patrice loved gardening and spent much of her free time reading in her garden during the warmer months. She was an avid lap swimmer and regularly swam at the “Nat,” now the Huntsville Aquatics Center. She traveled often to the beach, where she liked to relax, read, and listen to the ocean. Most recently, she enjoyed being “Granna” to little Elsie and excitedly awaited the upcoming arrival of Elsie’s sibling.
A visitation is scheduled for Saturday, February 12, 2022 from 2-5 PM at Valhalla Funeral Home, 698 Winchester Road NE, Huntsville, Alabama 35811. In lieu of flowers, her family requests that donations be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and the Melissa George Neonatal Memorial Fund through the Huntsville Hospital Foundation.
