Katherine and I are grateful that all four of our children (James, Mary, Drew and Bren) were taught by Meryal.  A great teacher and mentor to our children. Thank you.

Such a gift! I will always remember Meryal's intense passion for teaching and caring for her students and all that she met. I'm convinced that I would not have set the lofty goals I set for myself in college had it not been for my time spent in Mrs Smith's chemistry class. The knowledge she conveyed and the confident way in which she handled herself served as a role model for me in a technical field (yes, 35 years ago those role models were less common than today). And then, to find out that my son would also have the opportunity to share time with Mrs Smith was almost too good to be true! When I shared the news of her passing, my son was shaken and we shared a big hug. He remembered the great times that she spent with the Science Olympiad team and all her chemistry students. She impacted his life in many of the same ways as she had mine. So, to Meryal's family - thank you for sharing Mrs Smith with my family and know that we are looking up to heaven to see those kind eyes and hear those encouraging words from Meryal.

Meryal was in our Friendship Force tour group to New Zealand this past October. We remember her enthusiastically clicking away with her camera at every garden and other sights. Her love for travel was infectious - Meryal had made plans for Spring travel after her treatments. I pray her trip to Heaven will be filled with many beautiful sights.

I was blessed to have an aunt like Aunt Meryal.  In fact it is hard for me to imagine a future with out her in it! She helped me adopt my daughter Lauren, always kept up with every part of my life and all of my relatives' lives.  She was a constant role model for me.  She was like a mother to me in many ways after my mother's passing.  We shared so many likes in common that being around her was pure joy!  You were simply the best Aunt Meryal!  Fly High and enjoy your well deserved time in heaven.

I don't remember everything I learned in Ms. Smith's class, but I do remember learning from her living example a lot about acceptance, patience, warmth, encouragement and laughter.  Thank you, Mrs. Meryal Lynch Pierce Fenner & Smith (as we affectionately called her).

She taught me in 1982 and then my son in 2008.  My son thought as much of her as I did.  That's pretty special to touch people for 30 years.

Mrs. Smith will always be my vision of a great, enthusiastic chemistry teacher. She set high standards but was always fun. I remember her smiling as she set methane soap bubbles on fire in lab as they floated dangerously close to the ceiling! She had real spirit and I'm thankful to have been her student.

Meryal's AP Chem class taught me so much more than Chemistry. She remains in my heart as a model of a super teacher.

My most favorite teacher! She inspired me to love learning. Even when I saw her after high school and college she always remembered me. But what I remember most was her kind and gentle smile. Bless you, Mrs. Smith-  I know you have a special place with heaven's angels!

Meryal was an extraordinary faculty member and 
an outstanding teacher at Huntsville High. Her students loved her and the administration respected her integrity and dedication to giving the very best to her students. Many of the doctors and those in other medical field have given her credit for the foundation she provided them to pursue their own professional career. I didn't know you well, but from the stories I've heard from our common relatives, I do know you were an intelligent, caring and wonderful person. Rest in peace, Meryal Ann.

Mrs. Smith was a sweet lady & teacher. I had her at Huntsville High decades ago...very fond memories of her with always a pleasant smile for everyone.

I will certainly miss seeing Meryal at the meetings of the North Alabama Shell Club. What a legacy she left behind with 40+ years teaching school! My thoughts & condolences to ALL of her family.

You have a thousand children and more grandchildren not by blood, but by the love of your teaching and the knowledge and inspiration you passed down to so many students over the years. We are grateful for that and sad for losing such a wonderful person. It was a life well-lived and fruitful, beyond the accomplishments of most. Journey well, Captain Meryal.

I will miss Aunt Meryal Ann terribly. I loved her dearly, and she helped me in an uncountable number of ways over the years. She was the Matriarch of our family, and the glue that held it together. And she was loved and revered by generations of her chemistry students. Finally, because of her unceasing efforts, it was a better world for the stray cats of Huntsville - she was constantly finding them loving homes.

Meryal Ann, I can't believe you're gone so quickly, we just talked a couple of weeks ago and you sounded wonderful.  I'll miss you always.
