Eva Kathryn Witt Geiger, known affectionately as “Sister” by her parents and brother, passed away peacefully on August 2, 2023, in Huntsville, Alabama, at the age of 87. She was born on April 2, 1936, in Lake City, Florida, to the late Alma and Jacob Witt. Eva was a devoted wife of 67 years to John Charles Geiger. She was also a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She will be deeply missed by her family and all who knew her.
Eva possessed a remarkable talent for sewing and was an accomplished seamstress. From a young age, she and her mother would design and create many of her clothes. In fact, Eva even designed and made her own wedding dress. In her later years, she began quilting. She worked on quilts with a group from her church. Eva also worked on quilts for her grandchildren. She inspired her youngest granddaughter to continue with her work by finishing the quilt that they were working on together.
Eva's love for cooking and baking brought joy to countless holiday celebrations with her family. She was also known for making sourdough bread and strawberry preserves. Eva gladly passed on her love for these activities to anyone in her family who was willing to learn. Above all, her family was her passion. Spending time with her loved ones brought Eva immense happiness. She also loved to travel with her husband John, and together they visited many countries around the world.
In addition to her domestic pursuits, Eva was a woman of faith. She was a dedicated member of the First Baptist Church of Huntsville for 57 years, where she served in various capacities. Eva's love for the Lord was evident in her involvement with the children's ministry and her contributions to the history committee and the Women’s Missionary Union.
Eva's educational path began at Andrew Jackson High School in Jacksonville, FL, before continuing at the University of Florida for two years. After marrying her high school sweetheart, John, in 1956, she pursued her education once her three children were in school. Eva obtained her Bachelor's degree in Education from the University of Alabama in Huntsville in 1973. Eva's passion for education led her to a fulfilling career as a teacher. She began her teaching journey in 1973 at Weatherly Elementary School, where she dedicated 26 years of her life shaping young minds. After she retired from teaching, she spent her remaining years as a volunteer, tutoring children in reading, working with the ESL program at church, and delivering for Meals on Wheels.
Eva is survived by her loving husband, John Charles Geiger; her devoted children Wade Geiger (Cheryl Geiger), Lisa Moon, and Lynn Moore (Mark Moore); her grandchildren John Moon (Lindsay Moon), Jay Moon (Cara Moon), Chase Moore, Bailey Geiger, Will Geiger, and Mary Grace Geiger; and 5 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Harry Witt and his children Scott Witt (Kelly Witt) and Celeste Armitage (Steve Armitage). She was preceded in death by her father Jacob Witt, mother Alma Witt (Toby), and grandson Jackson Moore. Eva Witt Geiger's warm presence, unwavering love, and devotion to her family and community will be deeply missed. Her legacy of creativity, faith, and kindness will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
