She was a long time resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Sylvia was born on December 20, 1938 in Washingtonville, Pennsylvania to parents, George S. Maurer and Elaine V. Maurer. She graduated from Frankford High School in 1956 and enjoyed being a color-guard for her alma mater.
Sylvia’s greatest joy and love was being married to her late husband George, caring for their 3 children and being a homemaker. Sylvia and George very much enjoyed collecting Americana memorabilia since George was a descendant of a signer of The Declaration of Independence. They loved “antiquing”, collecting pewter and other early Americana items, as well she adored collecting Boyd’s Bears. She was an amazing seamstress and loved entertaining family members and friends. She was an amazing cook and baker and was probably best known for her pies (esp. apple crumb!), butter cookies, homemade gravy, coleslaw… I could go on!
After her children were grown and in high school, she began a working career as a Medical Receptionist for Dr. John F. Quigley for 28 years. She forged friendships that would last a lifetime. She and George traveled when they could and were always sweethearts, still holding hands until the day he passed. Her other greatest joy was her (7) grandchildren and being called “mom-mom”. She loved seeing them and always looked forward to attending their special events such as birthday parties, plays, games, graduations, proms, etc. She always loved being a part of family gatherings, going to Beth & Larry’s place in Sea Isle City NJ, trips to Lancaster, PA (esp. the Shady Maple smorgasbord!), Vince’s Pizza, Peddler’s Village to name a few. More recently, weekly outings to Panera Bread and Chick-fil-A were a favorite but no matter where or what, she was always happiest seeing and being with her family. She will be missed dearly but it brings the family comfort knowing she is back with her only love, George.
Sylvia was preceded in death by her late husband, Rev. George F. Margerum, Jr., Deacon.
Sylvia is survived by her children Joyce (Craig) Belnick, Beth (Larry) McCarthy, and Brett (Nancy) Margerum; her grandchildren Joshua Belnick, Lawrence McCarthy, Colleen (Matthew) Gentile, Megan McCarthy, Hope (Tyler) Lindblade, Olivia Margerum, and Drew Margerum.
