Susan Inez Griffin Schmidt, 95, of Spring, Texas, passed peacefully in her sleep into the waiting arms of her Lord, surrounded by her family, on Wednesday, May 12, 2021, at HCA Houston Healthcare Northwest, following a brief illness.
She was born on September 28, 1925, in Rogiliville, Louisiana, to William J. and Minerva Carpenter Griffin, the seventh of ten children.
Inez married the love of her life, Robert Perry Schmidt, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on November 21, 1952. They were happily married for 58 years before he was welcomed into eternal life on October 23, 2010. Following their marriage, they lived in Baton Rouge, LA, Memphis, TN, Chattanooga, TN, Birmingham, MI, Indianapolis, IN, Charlotte, NC, Houston, TX, and finally retiring in Spring, TX.
She was a long-time active member of Spring Woods United Methodist Church in Houston, TX, since 1972, and a member of the Lee Bible Class. She enjoyed working many years with the UMW workshop ladies, crafting and sewing items for their annual Christmas Bazaar, and made many ornaments for the Chrismon Tree. She was also known as “The Cookie Lady” at Mother’s Day Out. In addition, for many years she prepared communion for the church congregation.
Inez had a strong faith and loved her Lord with her whole heart. A devoted wife and mother, her family was very precious and meant everything to her. Family traditions were also very important to her and she cherished passing them along to the next generation. She was an extremely generous and selfless giver, ready and willing to lend a hand to anyone in need, always putting the needs of others before her own.
She welcomed family members and friends into her home with open arms, and enjoyed entertaining and cooking for them. She also enjoyed baking, sewing, and crafting. Gardening, being outdoors, and working in her yard in the warmer weather were some of her favorite pastimes. She was an avid solitaire player and worked hundreds of jigsaw puzzles over the years. She loved drinking her “hot” coffee, at times even having contests to see who could drink the most!
Those left to carry on her legacy and cherish her memory are her three sons, Robert P., Jr., of Austin, TX, Warren and his wife Karen N., of Douglas, TX, David and his wife Karen M., of Spring, TX; two grandchildren, Jesse, of Douglas, TX, and Hannah, of Spring, TX; one cousin, Joyce Marie Ashford, of Baton Rouge, LA; one sister-in-law, Barbara Mebane, of Burlington, NC; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert P. Schmidt, and her brothers and sisters, including Louise Elena, John Samuel, Charles Burnadotte, Joseph David, Jesse Lea, Sarah Jane, Howard Edward, Mary Minerva, and Carrie Belle.
Visitation will be at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 19, 2021, followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. at Spring Woods United Methodist Church, 1711 Cypress Creek Parkway, Houston, TX 77090, with Rev. Steffon Arrington officiating. Interment will follow immediately at Calvary Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her honor to Spring Woods United Methodist Church.
Inez’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the entire staff at Unlimited Care Cottages for the exceptional and compassionate care she received during the past seven and a half years.
