Shirley Lois Jenkins, age 88, beloved mother, grandmother/“Mamaw”, sister, friend, passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 6, 2019 in Spokane, Washington, with complications from dementia. Born June 19, 1930 in Port Arthur, Texas to Lester and Gertrude Gordy, Shirley grew up in southeast Texas, and graduated from Port Neches-Groves High School Class of 1948. While attending high school, Shirley was cheerleader, basketball player, sorority member, and met the love of her life, Herman "Jack" Jenkins. Shirley and Jack married in Groves, TX on September 1, 1951 and lived in Austin, until Jack’s graduation from the University of Texas. They relocated with Texaco to Illinois and Houston, were blessed with their son, and cherished life together until Jack passed away in 1984, after 33 years of marriage.
Shirley delighted in hosting, antique shopping for depression glass, decorating, and cooking delicious meals, including gumbo and scrumptious spaghetti & meatballs. She was humorous, sassy, witty, and wise. She loved family and friends with her whole heart. After the passing of her husband, Shirley relocated to Spokane, Washington to live closer to family and her dearly loved granddaughters. Shirley wrote with beautiful cursive writing and often signed “Love Ya Lots” on thoughtful correspondence. Mamaw/Shirley, you are missed but will always be remembered fondly for your laughter and love.
Shirley is preceded in rest by her husband Herman Jack Jenkins and her brother Leslie Gordy. She is survived by her son, Rodney (Jill) Jenkins of Spokane, WA. ; her two granddaughters, Savanna and Leah; her sister, Margaret (Bob) Boldt of Richardson, TX.; her brother, Earl Gordy of Beaumont, Tx. and numerous nieces and nephews. A visitation will be held for Shirley on February 2nd, 2019 at 1:00
