James worked on his grandfather’s ranch in Fields until he enlisted in the United States Army in January, 1961. During his tenure in the Army, he received numerous marksmanship badges for Expert (carbine), Sharpshooter (rifle), Marksman (pistol & missile). James attended Provost Marshal General’s School whereby upon completion in March, 1961, he became a K-9 Military Police Officer. It was during that time when he met his first love, a German Shepard named Tina Louise, who spent many years of faithful service at his side.
James received an honorable discharge from the Army in December, 1966 and relocated to Houston Tx. There, he attended The University of Houston, majoring in Business Management, and also attended classes at Dale Carnegie.
James eventually met and married the second love of his life, Alice Mae Springfield on July 28, 1968. James then began a lifelong career in the oil and gas industry, beginning with Taylor Forge Incorporation, where he worked as a machinist and foreman. He then went on to become Vice President of Production at WFI International, where he stayed for over 30 years until he retired.
It would become apparent that James could not cope with retirement, so he went to work for Welding Outlet Incorporated. He was the Director of Manufacturing for several years there until he permanently retired.
