Carolyn “Judy” Chapman Childers was born February 14, 1941, she was the 5th of 7 children born to Newt and Hazel Chapman, in the town of Salam IL. She moved to Pasadena Texas with her parents and two of her younger siblings in 1957. She married Gene Childers, moving to Jacinto city, Texas to start her own family. She had one son David Childers and a daughter Terrie Childers, including the addition of her one grandchild Preston Childers. Moving to Spring, Texas in 1974 where she resided for the remainder of her life.
Hazel Chapman was Judy’s mother, Hazel married Newt Chapman when she was 13 years old, she then had 3 children Maxine, Billy Bob and Deloris. She saw her children married and was given grandchildren. Then Newt and Hazel decided to have a second family. Randell, Judy, Lyndell, and Sonnie were born. For a job, Newt moved his family to Houston. Judy loved Salam, she returned there to graduate form Highschool with her best friend Ruth. Returning to Houston, to marry her Houston high school sweetheart.
Gene and Judy Childers were married April 1, 1960. They were introduced by Gene’s aunt who was also was the Chapmans landlord. They resided in Jacinto City at first to eventually move to Spring where together expanded on their mutual love of plants. Planting fruit trees, and berry’s and growing their own vegetables. And, as many flowers as the land would allow.
During the years of the 1970’s, 80’s and continuing today. Judy and Gene had a few “favorite” hobbies. Judy loved flowers, she loved plants to the point of even loving a weed. She was a member of the Rose Society, and The Daylily Club. Spending many years traveling all over Texas and Louisiana, visiting gardens. She filled her yard with plants, including opening her home up for garden tours. She was a certified Master Gardner, volunteering her time at different state autobahn locations.
Judy spent many years volunteering at the poultry club, spending many hours working for the Houston Livestock show and Rodeo, benefiting the youth in scholarships.
She also had a love of antiques and china with depression glass being her favorite. She started this hobby when she was first married and living on Green Dolphin, she would buy Autumn Leaf, Hall China from a door to door salesman. Today her collection still fills her home.
Carolyn Judy Childers lead a full and complete life, with none of her hobbies overshowing her first love, Our Lord, she was a devout Christian, she was a part of the congregation of Bammel Baptist Church and Oak Ridge Baptist Church. For many years she oversaw the Wednesday night dinners, never failing to provide a delicious meal, often being asked to provide the same meal again or give up a favorite recipe. Her love of the lord was deep and absolute, she attended and graduated from a two-year bible study certification course from Baylor University. She taught bible school and was a continuous source of support for mission work, bible study, and any emotional needs.
She was a very kind and special person, who loved deeply and was loved deeply. Anyone who met her would take her love for them with them for the rest of their lives.
A few interesting facts to Judy’s family history. She was born on her father’s birthday, February 14th, her siblings were born girl, boy, girl. She was in high school when she moved to Houston, she moved back to Salam to graduate. All her siblings went by their middle name or nickname.
