children to Tsang Chien-sin and Yun Wu. Julia’s family was originally from
Zhucheng, Shandong, with a distinguished ancestry of scholars and
prominent public officials. Her great grandfather Tsang Ji-chen was a Jinshi, a
high ranking official of the imperial examination system under Emperor
Tongzhi. Her grandmother, Liu Juquan, was the descendant of the famous
ministers Liu Tongxun and Liu Yong of Emperor Qianlong. A pioneering
woman of her time, she participated in the 1920s Northern Expedition in China
and then studied in Japan and the United Kingdom. She later served as a
high-ranking official in the government and as a council member in the
Supervisory Yuan. Julia’s father, studious and diligent, worked for many years
at the Taiwan Fertilizer Company and retired as the Business Manager. Her
mother was very kind and amiable. She is well remembered as a beloved
teacher of Chinese language and culture and as the board chair of Evergreen
Chinese School in Houston.
Julia grew up happily in Taiwan with her parents and elder sister Grace,
elder brother David, and younger brother Philip. Her father came to the United
States after retirement and helped the family immigrate to Houston after
acquiring permanent residency in 1976. Julia studied at the University of
Houston while working part time to earn her tuition. She graduated with a BA
in business in 1978. After working as an accountant, she switched industries
and became a data analyst. She worked at the City of Houston, Pennzoil, and
then with the MD Anderson Information Technology department for 20 years,
retiring in the spring of 2017. She loved her time at MD Anderson and was
proud of her work. She especially cherished her many good friends there.
Julia married Robert Yu-soung Ling in 1981, and they were baptized
together as Christians in 1997. Julia and Robert have one daughter, Grace,
also a baptized Christian, who is now 20 and studying at Trinity University.
Julia was very smart and kind. She loved to help others and was adored
by friends and relatives. She was extremely devoted to her parents and in-
laws. She loved traveling and cooking, with friends and relatives praising her
cooking skills at parties.
