Walter Rudolph Edwards was born in Del Rio, Texas on November 5, 1931 to parents Walter Kieffer Edwards and Jimmie Pauline (McNutt) Edwards. He passed away in Houston, Texas and went to his Heavenly home on Monday, November 30, 2020 at the age of 89.
Walter graduated Johnson City High School where his nickname was Doak due to his football skills! He attended Howard Payne University where he played basketball and met his wife, and after graduation remained an active alumni. He went on to receive his Masters from The University of Houston.
Following graduation from HPU, Walter served in the U.S. Army. After being honorably discharged, he began his career in Education with Texas Public Schools and private schools in the Houston area. He retired after years as a teacher, counselor and principal.
After moving to Houston, Walter became an active member in his church at Long Point Baptist, was a charter member of Spring Woods Baptist and a faithful member of Houston’s First Baptist Church.
Walter was a wonderful man, devoted to his family.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Martha; son, Robin Edwards and his wife Ida; daughter, Krissa Edwards; grandchildren, Grayson, Hannah, Samuel, Daniel; siblings, Jimmy, Patsy and George, other loving family members and many dear friends.
Family and friends will gather and share memories during a visitation on Wednesday, December 9 in the chapel of Houston's First Baptist Church, 7401 Katy Freeway in Houston, where a celebration of Walter's life will begin at 1:30 p.m. with Reverend David Self officiating. After a brief reception at the church, interment will follow at Memorial Oaks Cemetery, also in Houston.
