Vera Lee was born on December 14, 1935, in Charleston, Mississippi, to Robert Frank Herron, Jr. and Ouince Ola (Davis) Herron. Vera was the first-born child to this union. The family later moved to Memphis, Tennessee, where Vera grew up. She graduated from St. Augustine Catholic
School. She completed her upper educational studies at Tennessee State University, LeMoyne-Owen College and Trevecca Nazarene University. Vera obtained her master’s degree in education plus forty-five hours beyond. She was a certified educator for all grades. Vera’s heart was with elementary school aged children. She was employed at a few schools in the Memphis area; however, most of her teaching experience was at Douglas Elementary School.
On July 20, 1958, Vera Lee married her life mate, Arthur Self. They celebrated 62 years of marriage prior to his death. Together they built a life of love and cherished moments. One child, Arnita Francine, was born into their union. Her beloved Arthur passed away in 2020.
Outside of work, Vera Lee was avid and passionate about her faith, the love of Christ and her church, White Stone Missionary Baptist Church. She accepted Christ as her savior at a very young age. As she grew in her faith; she dedicated her life to Christ and the Church. At White Stone, Vera taught Sunday School for many years and served as the Assistant Superintendent for over 25 years. She was involved in and led numerous committees. She served on the Pulpit Committee that selected the church’s current Pastor, who has served at White Stone M.B. Church for over 42 years. Vera was also instrumental in creating the scholarship fund which assisted many students with their higher education endeavors. Vera loved walking in the mall and in her beloved Verdun Street Block Club neighborhood. She also enjoyed watching the Memphis Grizzlies Professional Basketball Team.
Vera Lee is survived by; her daughter, Arnita Francine (Self) Jackson; son-in-law, Danny Lee Jackson; and her loving sister, Robbye Steine’ (Herron) Peppers (Dr. Charles E. Peppers) and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, grand nieces and nephews, and many friends who will miss her greatly. She was preceded in death by; her husband, (Arthur Self); her parents, (Robert and Quince Ola Herron) and; brothers, John Lee (wife - Barbara) and Dominic Ira Herron.
A visitation for Vera will be held Friday, December 8, 2023 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at White Stone Baptist Church, 187 S Pkwy E, Memphis, TN 38106. A funeral service will occur Saturday, December 9, 2023 at 11:00 AM, 187 S Pkwy E, Memphis, TN 38106 with burial to follow immediately at New Park Cemetery, 4536 Horn Lake Rd, Memphis, TN 38109.
