Thomas, 81, devoted husband, father and grandfather passed away peacefully on June 20, 2016 with his family by his side. Born May 20, 1935 in Chicago, IL to Leonard and Sara Hymer. Graduated in 1953 from Austin High School, Chicago, IL and attended University of Houston and South Texas Junior College. Upon his discharge from the U. S. Air Force he went to work for Gulf Oil and later Texaco where he retired after 30 years of service as a Systems Programmer. On a trip to South Louisiana with his air force buddy he met the love of his life, Lucy Jane Schexnaider of Kaplan, LA. They married and moved to Houston in 1962. Tom loved to volunteer his time. He helped organize the Chevron/Texaco Retirees luncheons, he was a volunteer with VITA and Houston Asset Building Coalition for 24 years. While at VITA he became a Tax Center Manager with NCI working at several different locations around the Houston area. During election time he worked as a poll worker for early voting and as an election judge or alternate judge on Election Day. He was very active in the Campbell Woods Civic Club doing the newsletter, neighborhood patrol and serving on the Board of Directors. Tom loved history, reading, trivia and attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and dance recitals. He also enjoyed vacations with his family.
He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Lucy and his 3 sons, Keith & Debbie of Houston, TX, David & Bunny of Coppell, TX and Jimmy & Debbie of Katy, TX, grandchildren, Matthew, Sarah and Abby Hymer of Coppell, TX, Justin and Derek Hymer of Katy, TX. and a host of sister-in-law’s, brother-in-law’s, nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Preceded in death by his father, Leonard Hymer, mother, Sara Hymer Washburn, brother, Leonard Hymer and sister Joann Walters.
Visitation will be held Monday, June 27th at 5pm - 8pm with a Rosary at 7pm.
Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, June 28th at 11:15am - American Heritage Funeral Home 10710 Veterans Memorial Dr., Houston, TX 77038 followed by burial at 12:15pm Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, TX 77038.
