Sylvia Ann Brooks, age 82, entered into rest on July 13, 2017 in Katy, Texas. She was born to the late Mrs. Mildred D. & Mr. Julian S. Williams in Tampa, Florida. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Glenn Brooks.
Raised in Bay City, TX, Sylvia graduated from Bay City High School in 1952. Sylvia was a high school cheerleader and a lifeguard at the city pool before attending Baylor University and the University of Houston. In 1954. She married Glenn Brooks, also of Bay City and who had graduated from BCHS just a year earlier. Married for 56 years they had three children, Glenn Jr., Darrell, and Shari. During their marriage, they lived in Bay City and Victoria, TX for a short time, but lived in greater Houston for more than 50 years.
Sylvia was taught the importance of family by her parents J. S. Williams and Mildred Williams. Along with her brother, Julian, they spent most every summer traveling along the gulf coast to meet up at family reunions where they would celebrate with her 10 aunts and uncles, and 26 cousins. She soon brought her family along on the trips and this was a family tradition for many years.
Sylvia and Glenn resided in the Sharpstown neighborhood of Houston and raised their three kids on Leader St. They lived there for 41 years until moving to Katy in 2006. The neighbors on Leader Street were all dear friends and held a special place in her heart.
Sylvia worked and retired from HISD and was school secretary at Pat Neff Elementary in Sharpstown. She made many lifelong friends while at the school and spoke of all of them very often. It was a very important and impressionable part of her life.
She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi, she was active in Sharpstown Little League along with Glenn, and was a member of St. Martin Lutheran Church.
Most recently she resided at the Atria Senior Living community where she lived independently. She made many wonderful friends during her 5 years there and stayed very active until her health worsened earlier this year.
Sylvia Brooks was a devoted wife, a loving mother and grandmother, a loyal family member, and a cherished friend to many.
She is survived by her children. Son, Glenn Brooks Jr of Houston TX, son Darrell Brooks and daughter in law Dana Brooks of Katy, TX, daughter Shari Herrington and son in law Jerry Herrington, of Houston, TX. Also by her grandchildren William Brooks and wife Jessica Brooks, and Brian Brooks of Katy, TX. She is also survived by her brother, Julian Williams and sister in law Karen Williams of Conroe, TX and her nephews Brad Williams of Boston, MA and Rod Williams of Austin, TX.
Visitation will be held Monday, July 17, 2017 beginning at 2:00 pm at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will begin at 3:00 pm and a light reception will follow the conclusion of the service. The Graveside service will be held Friday, July 21, 2017 at 10:00 am at Roselawn Memorial Park, FM 2540, Van Vleck, Texas 77482 800-245-4613
