Ms. Sue Ann Smith, 68, of Sugar Land, Texas passed away peacefully Friday, January 8, 2021 surrounded by her loving family. On December 29, 2020 she rang the bell for completing radiation treatments and fighting a short battle with breast cancer.
Sue Ann was born March 3, 1952 in Fort Wayne, Indiana to Bill and Virginia Lewis. She grew up in Duncan, Oklahoma and graduated from Duncan High School in 1970 where she held the honor of Miss Oklahoma FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America). She briefly attended Oklahoma State University and the University of Oklahoma before earning a Bachelor of Science in Education with Honors from the University of Houston in 1974.
In September 1971, she married Ricky Smith of Snyder, Oklahoma. They resided in various major Texas cities before finally settling in Sugar Land located in Southwest Houston in 1990. They later divorced in 1997 but remained close friends.
In 1995, she began substitute teaching in Fort Bend ISD for a couple of years before starting her career as a Business Teacher at Austin High School. In 2013, she formally retired but continued to work part time at various schools either substitute teaching, administering standardized tests or selling memorabilia to graduating high school seniors for the company Balfour.
Sue Ann was a dedicated Stay at Home Mother when her daughters were young. She volunteered in the schools and was active in all their sporting activities. She participated in the Junior League while living in El Paso and enjoyed playing recreational tennis. She loved her four granddaughters ranging in age from 6 to 13 years old. She was the best cheerleader for these girls whether they were playing basketball, softball, soccer, volleyball, swimming or gymnastics. She adored her little dog Riley with whom she adopted a few years ago. She enjoyed playing games and sipping on a glass of Chardonnay.
She had a sarcastic sense of humor and could light up any room. Her laughter was contagious and made her beautiful green eyes sparkle. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Sue Ann leaves behind parents, Bill and Virginia Lewis of Duncan, Oklahoma; sisters, Lisa Padgett and husband Wes, and Sharon Hyde of Duncan, Oklahoma; daughters, Caroline Wentzler and husband Paul with daughters Katelyn and Melanie of Houston, Texas, and Lauren LeBlanc and husband Matthew with daughters Haley and Hannah of Missouri City, Texas; former spouse, Ricky Smith of Richmond, Texas; and a host of other nieces, nephews and friends.
The Smith family would like to give special thanks to the Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital ICU team who took such excellent care of her and allowed family to be present with her in her final moments.
