Shannon was born on May 2, 1952 to her two loving parents, Bette and Kenneth Strange in Glen Rose, TX. She graduated from Alief High School, in the spring of 1970. During her time at Alief, she began dating the man who would become the love of her life, Conover H. Able Jr. at age 16. The high-school sweethearts quickly fell in love and were eventually married on January 22, 1972.
Shannon was characterized as a warrior by many during her 50-year battle with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Despite her illness, Shannon continued to stay active within her community and family. After marrying into the Able Family in 1972, she received her private pilot’s license. Ironically, she quickly hung up her wings and found that her love for traveling did not match her love for flying. With her husband, she traveled all through Mexico, the western United States, Alaska, Maine, and even to Hawaii. Shannon experienced her first symptoms of MS on a trip to Hawaii in the early 70s. Despite her battle with MS, Shannon embraced her love for traveling her entire life, as she drove all through Texas with her husband Conover. Shannon grew a love for South Texas, as it became an activity for her whole family. Professionally, Shannon worked for Able Furniture and in the accounting department of TXG Industries. Additionally, she received her Real Estate Broker’s license in the 70s. She was a docent at the Houston Heritage Society, a member of the 99’s and many other organizations.
While Shannon was deeply involved in her community, her first and foremost priority was always her family. With her husband Conover, they had two children, Conover (Trey) H. Able III and Corinne (Corie) Able Green. She raised a family centered around love. Constantly leading by example, Shannon instilled numerous life lessons in her children and encouraged them to stand up for what they believe is right. From when her children were young, their family had a strong love for the water and specifically the beach of Galveston where she and her husband loved their beach home. She enjoyed spending time outside with her family and embracing the sea breeze. Her family remembers her keen ability and love to find hundreds of sharks’ teeth for hours on end walking the beach. Additionally, Shannon was an avid sports fan, constantly involved in both her children and grandchildren’s sporting events. Shannon was one of the biggest Astros fans, being a ticket holder for over 40 years. She was also a tennis player, playing for multiple competitive teams over the years. All in all, those who got to meet Shannon know that she was an amazing woman who would love all that she came across. She was loyal and loving and will be missed by all.
She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Conover H. Able Jr.; her mother, Bette Strange; her two children and their spouses Trey and Jeannie Able and Corie and Jeffrey Green; five grandchildren, Conover (Connor) H. Able IV, Addisyn Able, Griffin Green, Austin Green, and Charley Green; her siblings, Jon Strange, Bridget Holland, Kelly Torrez, David Strange; her many nieces and nephews whom she loved like her own children; and many other family members who were loved by Shannon.
Shannon was preceded in death by her father, Kenneth B. Strange.
