Sandra was born October 22, 1940 in New Orleans, LA. Her family relocated to Houston when she was twelve. After graduating from St. Agnes Academy in 1958, she attended The University of Houston and was active in Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. She married and had two children. She then returned to The University of Houston and earned her Bachelor of Science Degree with honors in Biology. She went to work as a Microbiologist at Visco/Nalco in a time when very few women had STEM careers. She made the decision to take a job as a Biology Teacher so she could be with her young children during summers. As a single mother, she bought her first house in 1969 when women were not able to obtain mortgages on their own. With the help of a female banker, she found a way. She became the Science department chairman at Spring Branch High School where she taught 12th grade, honors biology. Sandra was extremely passionate about her field throughout her professional career. She earned a Masters Degree in Education and LPC license, all while raising two teenagers.
After her children were grown, she began to travel the world and went to work for the US Department of Defense Dependent Schools in Ansbach Germany. There she met many good friends and traveled Europe for 10 years. After several years living in Naples Italy, she returned to Houston so she could spend time with her first grandchild. She retired as a school counselor from Milby High School and enjoyed being a full-time active grandmother for the next 20 years.
She was preceded in death by her father, Vincent Frank Montalbano, her mother, Anna Myrtle Askelund Montalbano and two young brothers, Vincent Lester Montalbano and Vincent Frank Montalbano.
