Sandra Sue McGaughey-Martin

Sandra was born on August 31, 1938 to Harry and Florence Schubeck in Houston, TX. She attended and graduated Austin High School in Houston where she proudly participated in the Scottish Brigade. After graduation she married, Bruce McGaughey and went on to have three children, John, Mitchell, and Richard. Sandra raised her family in her house on Sims Street where she famously hosted parties, large family events, and holidays. Sandra had a big heart, and she opened her large home to friends and family whenever they needed a place to stay. Sandra later married her second husband Max Martin.

Sandra had a passion for family, politics, dance, gardening, and the arts. She supported and regularly attended the Houston opera, and the Houston Museum of Natural Science. She served as an election judge for her precinct and was very politically active. Sandra also held leadership positions in the Houston Day Lilly Society, and Houston Amaryllis Society. She worked as a legal secretary and then paralegal at some of the most prestigious law firms in Houston. For many years she was an active member of the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.

Sandra was a kind and giving person. She was easy to laugh and had a good sense of humor. She was the matriarch of her family, always teaching by example how to conduct yourself with style and grace. After retirement she eventually moved from her home on Sims Street to live with her son Mitchell and his family in Castle Rock, CO.

Sandra is survived by her sons John McGaughey (wife Charlotte McGaughey), Mitchell McGaughey (wife Cathy McGaughey) grandchildren Sara Reeves, Keri Crooks, John McGaughey Jr., Kelsey McGaughey, Sara Chamberlain, Lauren McGaughey, Elise McGaughey, Hannah McGaughey, and Ellie McGaughey. Great Grandchildren Hailey Crooks, Macy Crooks, Owen McGaughey, Leo Serrano, Kayla Chamberlain, Natalie Chamberlain, Skyler Miller, and Evelyn Arrington. Nieces and Nephews Harry Schubeck III, Angela Wells, and Rebecca Schubeck. Sandra had a large loving family of cousins and close friends who will dearly miss her.

Sandra is preceded in death by her husband Max Martin, father Harry Schubeck, mother Florence Schubeck, brother Harry Schubeck Jr., sister-in-law Nina Schubeck, and son Richard McGaughey.

A visitation for Sandra will be held Saturday, September 9, 2023 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home, 6900 Lawndale Street, Houston, TX 77023. A funeral service will occur Saturday, September 9, 2023 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM. A committal service will follow at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery Abbey Mausoleum.
