He was born April 10, 1959 in Houston, TX to Samuel and Vivian Kempt. Sam was one of four children, a younger Brother, William, two older sisters, Patricia, and Donna. His mother worked as a nurse and his father a retired fireman. Sam’s grandparents and aunts also played a major role in his childhood upbringing. He graduated from Kashmere High School 1977 and Prairie View A&M in May of 1981 with a degree in Electrical engineering. While at Prairie View A&M, Sam became a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. Later, he would go on to begin working as an Electrical Engineer ending his career as a Lead Engineer with Freeport LNG. In June 1985 he married, Antoinette Scott. He was also a lifetime member of the NAACP and a member of Fallbrook Church under the leadership of Executive Pastor Michael Pender. Sam was a published author of The Pacman Plan: A Story of the Struggle for Reparations, an avid reader, jazz enthusiast, and a world traveler.
Sam is preceded in death by his parents: Samuel & Vivian D. Sayles Kempt; grandparents: Lewis & Lura Sayles; aunts: Rheuma Leuna Steed, Ella B. Sayles, and Odessa Sayles.
Left to cherish his memory, wife: Antoinette Scott Kempt; children: Vivian Watkins (Samuel), Deanna Sloan (Rinaldo); grandchildren: Samuel R. Watkins II, Nora Watkins, Prosper Watkins, Ariyah Sloan; sisters: Donna L. Kempt, Patricia Kempt Limbrick (Donald); brother: William S. Kempt (Jamale); aunt: Jessie M. Smith; special cousin: Paula D. Malone (Charles); along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Visitation for family and friends will begin on Saturday, October 24, 2020 beginning at 12PM with the funeral service to begin promptly at 1:30pm at Brookside Funeral Home, 13747 Eastex Freeway Houston, TX 77039. Interment to follow immediately after the funeral service in Brookside Memorial Park.
