He graduated from St. Thomas Catholic School where he played football and attended the University of Houston. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during the Korean War. His life was dedicated to church, country, family and friends. Honor, dignity and respect for our country, family, and neighbors ruled his life. Roy has a sister, Shirley Weatherford of Katy who was always a joy in his life and others.
Roy purchased a home in Conroe on Lake Forest Falls to have a place to bring his family together and we enjoyed many memorable days. As an athlete and competitor, he was more than ready to play golf and putt putt, play football, ride a motorcycle, jet ski, swim and water ski, water slide and race you to the end of the yard. As a young boy he had a pony and always adored animals. He loved his grandchildren and would not miss being on the floor playing or reading to them. His brother and family members loved to make motorcycle trips in the country and Roy enjoyed being with them every time. Roy was called Paw Paw and spent many holidays with family and was always ready to have fun with everybody.
He is preceded in death by his parents Lillian and Weldon Haenelt, his brother Weldon Haenelt, son Roy Robert Jr. and Lucky Schaffer, and grandson Donald Michael Cain.
He is survived by wife Sally Haenelt, Patricia and Mack Morgan, Sally and David Cain; grandchildren Trey Haenelt, Ryan Haenelt, Chase and Makayla Eckert, Tara and Jacob Johnson, David and Vanessa Cain, Jennifer and Eric Brown, Dean and Nancy Schaffer, Robbie and Stephanie Schaffer, Jerry and Barbara Schaffer and 20 great grandchildren.
Great grandchildren Everly Johnson and (Emersyn) Johnson, Hudson, Holt and Hadley Eckert, Lola and Abraham Cain, Montana, Sierra and River Brown, Sam and Shannon Shaffer, Lauren and Douglas Shaffer.
Roy raised us all up on every occasion to help us see the best in ourselves and others. He will be forever loved and missed.
