Robert Stephen “Bob” Toth M.D., J.D., LL.M.

Bob was born in Brooklyn to Faye and Ernest Toth. As a child Bob loved his studies and excelled at exams. He attended Bronx High School of Science for two years and then matriculated at Hunter College, where he graduated cum laude in Mathematics at age 18. Afterwards Bob worked in computer science. At 21 he gave his heart to the Lord and moved to Tennessee to study Theology at Southern Missionary College.

Bob later moved to Houston, received the Doctor of Medicine degree from Baylor College of Medicine, and became a “naturalized Texan.” He served a residency in Dallas and moved to San Angelo to practice. Bob then returned to Houston to practice medicine and to study at South Texas College of Law, where he earned his Doctor of Jurisprudence degree summa cum laude. He would later receive a Master of Laws degree from the University of Houston.

Bob practiced law in Houston for 23 years and became certified in both personal injury trial law and legal medicine, specializing in obstetrical and anesthesia malpractice. He also consulted for many leading Houston attorneys, including his friends Howard Nations, Wayne Fisher, and Jim Perdue. Bob tried to live 25 hours a day. He was an avid recreational runner, completing several marathons. Bob had a dry, broad sense of humor. His tastes in music ran from classical and swing to blue grass and gospel. His favorite songs were “Danny Boy” and “There Must Be a Greater Yes.”

Bob loved being around the water, boating, scuba diving, and waterskiing. He spent several winters aboard his sailboats in Savannah and the Bahamas. For 25 years Bob served with the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary and was promoted to Flotilla Commander in 1996. Bob was responsible for reviving and bolstering the Auxiliary’s boating safety and rescue missions, with an expanded Flotilla headquarters building and a new communications tower. He also earned a Full Certificate from the United States Power Squadron.

Bob met Fiona Newport in September 2003, and that would be the end of their lives as “singles.” She shared his love of opera, ballet, theater, art, boating, exercise, entertaining and science fiction. They married in 2005. Bob would often say that God sent Fiona to him as an undeserved blessing. It was a miracle how they met and how suited they were for one another.

Bob was always generous with his time and money. He and Fiona belong to Mims Baptist Church in Conroe, where they have enjoyed inspiring worship, music and education. They regularly made time for Bible conferences and sacred music concerts.

At age 57 Bob became a financial advisor and later a Retirement Income Certified Professional® to provide his clients with the soundest advice. He remained a Life Member of the Texas Medical Association and an Emeritus Member of the State Bar.

After learning of Bob’s cancer, he and Fiona moved to a home on their beloved Lake Conroe. Bob devoted himself to Fiona, travel, family, friends, fighting his disease, and preparing to meet his Maker. A proud day came when he was conferred citizenship by the Republic of Hungary.

Bob is most thankful for the personal care and attention that he received from his classmate, Internist Jim Muntz, M.D., and Oncologist Paul Corn, M.D., Ph.D. Bob was always grateful for his mostly good health and for the love of his Savior Jesus Christ.

Bob is survived by his much beloved wife Fiona Newport Toth, his cousin Sandra Mae Lindenauer, Fiona’s parents Doreen and Albert Newport, her brother Campbell Newport, and many friends, including Theresa and Dr. Michael Meschke, Dianne and Jim Curry, Susie and Jim Pokorski, Joyce and Jack Frassanito, Dr. Alice Gates, Dr. Byron Bohnn, and Margaret and Les Hess.

Friends are cordially invited to gather with the family and share remembrances of Bob from five o’clock in the afternoon until eight o’clock in the evening, on Thursday, the 1st of March 2018, in the library and grand foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.

A funeral service will be conducted at one o’clock in the afternoon on Saturday, the 3rd of March 2018, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.

The interment service will follow, via an escorted cortege, at Glenwood Cemetery in Houston.
