During the Vietnam Era, Rick served with pride in the U.S. Naval Reserve, dedicating two years to active duty and an additional four years as a Reservist.
Above all, Rick cherished his family and considered them the most significant part of his life. He found immense joy in being actively involved in his children's lives. Rick's passion for volunteering led him to serve as a Cub Scout Leader, as well as coaching basketball and baseball. He had an unwavering commitment to attending every game, never wanting to miss a single moment. Upon becoming a grandfather, Rick embraced a playful spirit, always laughing and cherishing joyful moments with his grandchildren. He would regularly call them just to say hello, eager to discover what was new in their lives. Even when distance separated the family, Rick and Alice worked tirelessly to ensure their presence during those treasured occasions, such as graduations and birthdays.
In addition to his dedication to family and sports, Rick selflessly volunteered his time and efforts in various capacities. He served as an Eucharistic Minister and Parish Council member in his Catholic Parishes, as well as took on the role of HOA President in his neighborhood community. Rick's altruism extended beyond his local community as he also volunteered at Duke Raleigh Hospital in Raleigh, NC, and at Wise Health System in Decatur, Texas. Fondly known as "The Candyman," Rick warmly welcomed patients and their families with a piece of candy, hoping to bring smiles to their faces.
Rick is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Alice, and their three sons: Richard Rowell Jr. and his wife Elizabeth, along with their children Maura Rowell, Grace Rowell, husband Kace Durbin, great-granddaughter Lyla Durbin, and Nolan Rowell; Todd Rowell and his wife Jeni, and their children Tavish Rowell, Baedyn Rowell, and Jubilee Rowell; and Ted Rowell and his wife Whitney, as well as their children Alexandra Rowell and Amelia Rowell. Rick is also survived by his sister, Patricia Rowell, of Alexandria, Virginia.
During this challenging time, our family expresses sincere gratitude to MD Anderson and Houston Hospice for their exceptional care and unwavering support.
