He was born May, 26, 1928 in Dallas, TX to parents, Porfirio & Juana Hernandez. Raymond’s father moved the family to Houston in search of work before he was even a year old. He grew up during the Depression as the eldest of six children. In high school he played a number of sports; including baseball, basketball, and football. It was during his football playing days that he picked up his long time nickname, “Butch”. It was also in high school that he met his wife, Carlotta Hernandez. They made an unusual pairing with him being close to six feet tall and her barely five feet tall, but they were a perfect match. Their first date was to a 16th of September dance, and that date has continued to be a special day for both of them. Raymond & Carlotta had 6 children; 5 boys, and one girl. When his daughter was born, he could not believe it! He had waited so long for her, and his hopes for a girl had finally come true. He loved the fact that he could play sports with his kids. Some of his greatest weekends were spent playing basketball games with his boys in the driveway of his home. Raymond worked tirelessly to support his family. He often held two or three part time jobs while he worked his full time job at the post office. He retired from the Postal Service after 37 years of service. He also retired from Spring Branch I.S.D. after 30 years of service, and began another career of traveling with his wife. They had great adventures to all parts of the country, going on road trips for weeks at a time. Most recently, they continued their traveling ways with the help of their children, traveling to Europe to see a grandson stationed in Spain.
Raymond is survived by his wife of 67 years, Carlotta Hernandez; his children, Ray and wife Amelia Hernandez, David and wife Ione Hernandez, Arthur and wife Rose Hernandez, Homer and wife Heather Hernandez, Carlos and wife Lisa Hernandez, and Belinda and husband Manuel Ynfante; 11 grandchildren & 5 great-grandchildren.
