Raymond grew up in the Houston Heights, He graduated from from Reagan High School where he was an outstanding athlete, receiving a track scholarship to Rice University. Raymond proudly served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
After the war, he returned to Houston, married Floy Wynne, worked for the 1st National Bank while completing his degree at the University of Houston. He then went to work for the Prudential Insurance Company Home Office and retired after over 30 years when the Home Office closed. He then went to work for the IRS, retiring in 2000 with 19 years of government service.
Raymond spent many years offciating basketball games and umpiring girl softball games. He and Floy had a house at Jamaica Beach and had many wonderful times there with family and friends. Raymond was a lifetime member of Heights Christian Church and an active member of VFW Post #8790.
Raymond was preceded in death by Floy, his wife of 54 years, and his brothers, Donald and Paul Coons. He is survived by daughters, Diane Mills and husband Dick and Cathy Edwards and husband John. He leaves 5 grandchildren, Minot Edwards and wife Lauretta, Jennifer Mills Martin, and husband Benoit, Laura Edwards-Smith, Christopher Mills and Kimberly Mills Tutor. He was proud of his 7 great-grandchildren, Kali, Blake, Emma, Kennedy, Layla, Savannah and Tristan. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Lucy Coons, several nieces and nephews and many friends, including special friend, Betty Burns.
Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Sunday, September 22, 2013 at Heights Funeral Home. His funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 23, 2013 at Heights Christian Church, 1703 Heights Blvd., Houston, Texas 77008. The service will be conducted by Rev. Herschel Moore and Rev. Harry Meissner. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, Houston, Texas.
