Peter Hinds, born April 20, 1940 in Walkers Wood, St. Ann, Jamaica to the late Olive and Peter Hinds, passed away on February 1, 2016. Peter was the sixth of nine children, and he received his formal education at Walkers Wood All Age School. There, he developed a deep love for the game of Cricket throughout his school years; a love that would continue across a lifetime.
After leaving School he landed a job at Reynolds Jamaica Mines (Bauxite). There, he developed his athleticism on their Cricket Team, which played matches all over Jamaica. He progressed his professional talents into the position of Apprentice Chef on a cruise ship, where his cooking skills and happiness were unmatched.
However, though Peter excelled at cooking at sea, his heart called him to join his brother and sister in Manchester, England to be together as a family. After Peter immigrated to The United Kingdom in 1963, he found work in a factory initially, but then joined his brother in the steel-work construction industry. Peter worked hard, but never lost touch with his passion for Cricket, and even played on several teams in Manchester, one semi-professionally.
In 1980, Peter made another big move to Houston, Texas, once again out of dedication to his family. He loved it here and was a friend to many. True to his roots, he continued playing Cricket state-side, and was one of the founding members of The Houston West Indies Cricket Team.
Something that was most important to Peter was his love and care for his family- from his sisters to his granddaughters and everyone in between, especially his baby girl, Shawnquin. Any occasion to bring the family together around a table full of beautifully prepared food was a feast of abundant taste and love.
Even as Peter’s health struggled in the early 2000’s, his gathering of friends and teammates swelled around him to show their support, respect, and love for a great player, friend, and man. His passing has left a void in our hearts, and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Left to remember Peter’s spirit and cherish his memory are his daughters; Veviene (Arville), Vivette, and Shawnquin; his sons, Carl and Peter Jr.; Sisters, Prudel and Gwenith; Brothers, Clement, Lloyd and George; his six loving grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
