Paul Thomas Coons, Sr., born June 27, 1920 to Ray and Nell Coons in Houston, Texas, passed away May 23, 2013 in Houston. Paul is survived by his beloved wife of 72 years, Lucy Coons; son, Paul Coons of Houston; son, Craig Coons and wife, Sandy, grandchildren, Brandi, Derek, and Dylan, and great-granddaughter, Chloe, all of Phoenix, Arizona; brother, Raymond Coons of Houston, and other family and friends.
Paul grew up in the Houston Heights. He attended Reagan High School where he met Lucy, and was an outstanding athlete, receiving a track scholarship to Rice University. Paul entered the Air Force during World War II and flew Thunderbolts and Mustangs in the Pacific. Upon returning to Houston, he built a home near Reagan High School and began working for Shell Pipeline, where he remained until his retirement. He and Lucy lived many years in the Clear Lake area, but always considered the Heights to be their true home.
Paul was an active member of the Air Force Reserves for twenty years, and continued his participation in sports as a great softball player. He is a member of the Legends Hall of Fame. Paul began playing tennis and returned to track and field as a participant in the Senior Games. He competed into his nineties. Paul was a lifelong member of Heights Christian Church.
Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Monday, May 27, 2013 at Heights Funeral Home. His funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at Heights Christian Church, 1703 Heights Blvd., Houston, Texas 77008. Interment will follow in Forest Park East Cemetery, Webster, Texas.
