Dad served in the Army Air Corps during WWII. During the conflict, he was stationed in Northern Italy as a member of the 97th bomb Group, 342 Squadron of the 15th Air Force. Dad was credited with twenty-eight missions over enemy territory. Upon completion of his service, he was awarded an Honorable Discharge on January 1, 1946. Upon completion of his service, he attended Southern Methodist University (SMU). After leaving SMU, he started a career in the Insurance industry where he spent the entirety of his working career. He worked for Transamerica for the last twenty years of his career and retired in 1990. Mom and Dad spent their retirement traveling all over the world and enjoying their social life at Inwood Forest Country Club. Although Dad never knew his own father, he pridefully adapted into his role as a father himself. This joy infinitely expanded when he became a grandfather to Dillon Don Hendrix, his only grandchild, and a great-grandfather to three kids who thought the world of him.
Don is preceded in death by Mary, his wife of sixty-nine years, daughter, Debra Laine Hendrix, and infant daughter. Left to honor his life are his son Don “Bun” Hendrix (Jackie), grandson, Dillon Don Hendrix (Kathryn), and their children, his great-grandchildren, Harrison, Reagan, and Jackson. The family offers thanks to the staff of the ICU at Memorial Hermann Greater Heights.
A service will be held on Wednesday, March 27, 2024 at 10:00am at Pat H. Foley & Company, 1200 W. 34th St, Houston, TX 77018, in his honor with he and Mom's interment to follow at 1:45pm at the Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Dr., Houston, TX 77038.
Dad was an annual contributor to the ASPCA of Houston and was home for countless animals over the years. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to an animal shelter of your choice to honor his memory and keep his love for animals living on in others.
