Nancy was born on August 18, 1931 in Birmingham, AL to Neva and Clyde Melton. She attended the University of Alabama and would don one of her Alabama National Championship shirts during every Alabama game to support her team. She served others both within the workplace and the home and volunteered extensively in local schools and her church, Terrace United Methodist. She married the love of her life, Grady Howton, on February 16, 1951 and they enjoyed 60 years of marriage full of laughter, travel, and love.
Nancy had a passion for many things, but mostly it was for her family. She participated in and captured all of the important and everyday moments from her days as a teenager through the births of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. This resulted in priceless photo albums that she began gifting each of us over the last several years. She never forgot a birthday, anniversary, or special moment and frequently sent thoughtful notes just to let us know we were loved. She was also an avid animal lover and raised numerous dachshunds who were members of the family. She was the heart of our family, and her example is one to follow.
In addition to her beloved husband, Nancy was preceded in death by her parents as well as her sisters, Betty and Doris. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Lee and Kay Howton, Doug and Sue Howton, and Janis and Doug Jordan. She is also survived by six grandchildren – Amanda (Jason), Douglas (Katelyn), Christopher, Cassidy, David, and Anna, along with four great grandchildren. In addition, she is survived by many dear friends including her best lifelong friend, Jeannine Spinks, the Chit-Chat Girls of the Westside, the Pilgrim Class, and the Little League Team Moms.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, January 18 at 11:00am at Terrace United Methodist Church, 1203 Wirt Rd., Houston, Texas at 11:00am. COVID protocols including social distancing and mask wearing will be followed. In addition, we will not be having a reception as per safety guidelines. If desired, memorial contributions can be made to the Houston SPCA or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
