On the afternoon of Sunday, May 30, 2021, Myles C. Downey passed away peacefully at his home in Missouri City where he was surrounded by his loved ones while the National Anthem played in the background. Very fitting for a Vietnam Veteran and double Purple Heart recipient, on Memorial weekend, as the Lord welcomed him home to heaven.
Myles was born (July 11, 1949) and raised in the Houston where he attended Strake Jesuit and San Jacinto High Schools. Always the jokester, he had a fearless way of living life on the edge with the ambition to protect and serve. This ultimately led him to join the US Army in 1967 where he trained to become an Airborne Ranger as part of the 75th Infantry. After returning from Vietnam as a young man, he attended college at Sam Houston State University where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice and was working toward his Master’s when he took his first law enforcement job with the Harris County Sheriff’s Department. His career spanned 30+ years and made the streets a safer place in the areas he patrolled, which included Memorial Village, Missouri City and then back to Memorial Village where he retired in 2012.
In his personal life, Myles had a love for fast cars, animals, movies, spending time at the gym and visiting with friends – old and new. He never met a stranger and always acted as a protector which is why he earned the love and respect everyone had for him. He had a way of making everyone feel safe and loved, even when he was playing practical jokes – which he did often!
When it comes to a man like Myles, there are no words to describe what he meant to everyone that was lucky enough to have him in their life. But most importantly, he ALWAYS provided for and protected his beloved family. Whether you called him husband, Dad, brother, grandfather (Pepa) or friend, it was obvious you were in the presence of a truly incredible person.
Myles spent the past 36 years with his wife, and the love of his life, Margaret Ann Downey. He was proceeded by his parents, Carroll Jackson Downey and Mary Lou Downey; and survived by his wife, Ann; three daughters, Ann Marie (Pix) Page (husband Drue Page and grandchildren, Oscar and Payton), Stacy (Downey) Schaefer (husband Lyn Schaefer and grandchildren, Skylar, Reagan and Lyndon), Linda Michelle Pix; Sister, Valerie (Downey) Schorer (husband Bill Schorer and nephew WD); brother, Mark Downey; his beloved dogs, Chopper, Chloe and Lucky; amongst extended family and countless friends.
Visitation will be held on Friday, June 4, 2021 from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm at American Heritage Funeral Home, 10710 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, TX. A military funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 5, 2021 at 11:00 am – 12:00 pm at American Heritage Funeral Home, 10710 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, Texas 77038.
