Dear Betsy, Kathleen, Claire, and entire Hurst family,
I just learned last night of Mike’s death. I am shocked and so saddened, as he was taken from you way too soon. Mike and I dated for over a year from 1978-1979.  I remember the night we met at the Joker Bar in Council Bluffs (no judgement there!😊) He was so handsome, kind, and smooth!  I was younger and from Omaha, so the following night we had to “pretend” we met at a party of a mutual friend and he then had to meet my parents before I could go on a date with him. He handled it with poise and ease. We had so much fun together during that young time in our lives!  “Cha” as his friends called him, was my “first love”. He helped me navigate the dark days of the unexpected death of my brother and my best friend in less than a year. I remember spending time at his family lake home (Johnson Lake, I think- see picture below) and babysitting his nephew, Eric Parrack.  Michael has always, and will continue to have a special place in my heart.  If you want more information about that time in his life, feel free to reach out. I will always remember his intelligence! His personal strength! And above all his Honesty!!! He brought all of these qualities into the workplace!! After meeting Michael while working for ABB Lummus Global until a few years ago when we connected again working for Woodgroup, I will remember him as a friend!! Gone from this life to the Eternal!!

Michael and I worked together on many projects as fellow structural designers. In all my years in the industry, I will remember his drawings as the apex of what should be delivered to a client. He was my "go to" guy for trivia of all kinds ... sports, classic rock, history, politics ... you named it, he usually knew it. And with his wit he could always make me laugh ... out loud. He deserves a special thanks for his work with the Houston Rodeo, his patriotism and his appreciation of our nation's servicemen and women.
                          Rest in peace, buddy.

I’m a high school classmate of Michael, or Mike as many of us called him in HS. I remember one football practice where he & I got into a “scrape”. Just competitive juices flowing and in the heat of the moment. It didn’t even take until after practice was over for both of us to get over it. I mostly remember his smile and laugh and his good-hearted nature. I know he’s missed by all the lives he’s been a part of.

Betsy, Kathleen, Claire, and the Hurst family... We are saddened to hear the news of Michael and offer our condolences.  We were all high school classmates of his and have fond memories with him during those times – some clearer than others.   We remember his stories, laughter, and passion (he would say “charm”) that were larger than the “State of Texas”.  He shared his joy and love of the state (Armed Forces and A& M Aggie football) and the Houston area (Bar-B-Q cook-offs, Astros and Rockets) with his friends “up North”.   We will miss his texts, emails and phone calls on current topics or his occasional vents. We grieve with you through this difficult time. We know memories of Michael will endure and remind us of his love for family and friends.

So sorry to hear about Mike. I was a classmate. He was so much fun in school. We were in drivers ed together and one day we were driving in the snow. We were always supposed to know what each and every sign said. Well this particular day, one of us, I won't mention a name, was asked what the sign said that we had passed. When said person did not know, our teacher made us get out of the car and tromp back to see what the sign said. Mary Keenan and I, of course were in our uniforms so it was a little chilly. Mike never missed another sign. Again I am so sorry for the loss of Mike. Thoughts and Prayers to the family.                                             

Kathleen & Claire, my thoughts and prayers are with you on the loss of your dad and to Dorothy on the loss of your son.  This is a difficult time, but know you have family and friends who love you very much..

Michael we wish you peace.  Kathleen and Claire, we are here for you.  You are two amazing girls that are loved very much!!  

Michael, you told us a few years ago that you received Jesus as your personal savior. We were glad to hear it then and very happy to know it now. God bless you Claire and Kathleen on the loss of your dad. We love you and will be praying for you during this difficult time. 

Betsy, please please know that our prayers from Mississippi are filling the skies as we ask our Lord and Savior JESUS CHRIST to give you the strength that only comes from Him. A year ago you were such a comfort to us as we sat at Mike’s bedside at MDAnderson. You are family and so very precious to us. I will always remember Michael’s contagious smile and wonderful laugh. We love you so, my sweet cousin.

My ole buddy Michael, did we ever pull off some major engineering coups the first time we met in Atlanta 1999. As we both were equal in the experience of the software we were using the things they told us not to do, late one night we decided let's do it anyway. The next day there was so much open satisfaction as to what was now new that we had to come clean and tell what we did. The look on the bosses faces were priceless, the fun we had for years telling that story was like we were war heroes. One of the few things we shared for 20 years, I will truly miss my friend, he was one of the last of us old school designers. Prayers for his family!!
