Michael Joseph Hurst passed away suddenly on Tuesday, October 15, 2019 at the age of 61. Michael was born on July 15, 1958 in Council Bluffs, Iowa but considered himself a Texan after moving to Houston in 1980. Outside of his career as a Structural Designer, Michael had a deep passion for knowledge. He rarely missed an episode of Jeopardy and delighted in sharing his endless trivia knowledge.
Michael loved the Nebraska Cornhuskers (Go, Big Red!), Texas A&M Aggie football, and the Houston Astros. He was a Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo enthusiast, participated in a cook-off team for many years, and served on the Armed Forces Appreciation Committee.
“Grumps,” as his grandsons affectionately called him, made friends wherever he went and never met a stranger. His boisterous personality will be sorely missed by his friends and family.
He was preceded in death by his father, Jack Hurst. He is survived by his wife, Betsy Hurst; daughters, Kathleen and Claire Hurst; sister, Sally Parrack and spouse Bill; step-daughter Katie Deakins and spouse Kyle; and his grandsons Jackson and Weston Deakins.
Visitation will be held at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home on Sunday, October 20 from 5-8 pm. A service and burial will be held at the same location on Monday, October 21 at 10 am.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you perform an unexpected, unsolicited act of kindness in Michael’s name.
