Merle Burran Cross was born on October 2, 1932 to Sanford and Opal Burran in Weches, Texas. She went to be with Lord on the morning of December 2, 2024 at the age of 92. She was preceded in death by her parents, all of her younger siblings (Frankie Pearl, Virgil, Waymon, and Charles), husband (James E. Cross Sr.), son (James E. Cross Jr.), and her infant son (Charles). She is survived by her son David Havard (Marti), daughter Gayla (Cross) Peterek (Frank), grandsons Jonathan Havard (Jacalyn), Matthew Havard (Liz), Ben Cross(Maria) and Carson, and great-grandchildren Aaron, Miles, and Violet, Milo, and Luna, along with numerous “special” nieces, nephews, and cousins. She also referred to Ladana (Thomas) Igler as her “2nd daughter”. In addition, she leaves behind her beloved church family of Pineview Bible Chapel.
Merle attended Glover High School and had many fond memories during her times there (including the pranks and shenanigans caused by her brothers). She spent a number of years working for Hudson Engineering in Houston as a receptionist and switchboard operator. After over a decade as a home-maker, Merle returned to work as a receptionist at Pinewood hospital, Citizens hospital, and the offices of Doctors Lee and Young. She then found her niche and most fulfilling job working at the law offices of the O’Donnel and Ferebee where she was called the “heart and soul of the firm.”
Merle was definitely a “people person” and seemingly never met a stranger. She took genuine pleasure in others and had an uncanny ability (even years later) to remember all the little details of their lives. She liked spending time with friends and family, enjoy doing her word search puzzles, and of course, watching Wheel of Fortune. Oh, and she liked her food — provided it was chicken! She frequently asked for chicken tenders or nuggets - along with some fried okra when she was in the nursing home.
We rejoice in knowing that her suffering is over and that she awaits us in heaven — along with our other family who can gone on before us.
A visitation for Merle will be held Sunday, December 8, 2024 from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Earthman Resthaven, 13102 North Fwy, Houston, TX 77060. A graveside service will occur Monday, December 9, 2024 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Weches Cemetery, 250 County Road 1580, Grapeland, TX 75844.
