Mary Lou Hakansson

She was a fifth generation Texan. She went to Lamar High School in Houston and attended the University of Houston.

She was married to her loving husband, Chuck for 60 years before his passing in 2006. They were big supporters of the University of Houston and attended many football and basketball games in town and around the country. They also enjoyed traveling the world. Mary Lou was a member of First United Methodist Church Downtown and they were married in the Chapel.

Mary Lou was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, brownie leader, girl scout leader and a cub scout den mother. She loved her children and grandson and great-grandson. The family went on many camping trips to Colorado and New Mexico.

She later joined Bouquettes Garden Club, Far Corners Garden Study Club, Houston Federation of Garden Clubs and was a Flower Show Judge. She became a District IV District Director. She made many new friends in the different Garden Clubs.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles (Chuck) V. Hakansson; parents, Joseph Wilson and Marie Lyons Wilson; her brothers, Joe Lyons Wilson, Ralph (Dorothy) Wilson and James Elmo Wilson and recently her son, Chuck Hakansson.

Mary Lou is survived by her daughter, Sherrie Steiger (and husband Ronald Steiger); grandson Joseph Steiger (and wife Kollette Kee Steiger) and great-grandson, Zachary Kee Clemmer of Austin.

The family wishes to thank Connie Smith as her Caregiver while she lived at home. They would also like to thank Comfy Home and staff for taking such good care of her.

Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from six o'clock until eight o'clock in the evening on Monday, the 22nd of May, in the library and grand foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.

A funeral service is to be conducted at eleven o’clock in the morning on Tuesday, the 23rd of May, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, where Rev. Ann Spears, Campus Pastor Downtown and Rev. Lance Richards, Senior Pastor at First United Methodist Downtown, is to officiate. Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the adjacent grand foyer.

The interment will follow, via escorted cortege, at Forest Park Lawndale in Houston.
