Martha Nell Coffman Grimes passed away on Tuesday the 9th of October 2018. She was born on the 6th of August 1941 in Nederland, Texas. She was the youngest of four children to Charles and Faye Coffman.
Martha attended Lamar University where she met Mike Grimes at the snack bar in 1960. After that, all bets were off for other potential suitors and on the 8th of June 1962 they began a wonderful and eventful marriage that would last until her passing.
Always the extrovert, she lived in eleven different cities making countless friends along the way. Among her many social affiliations, she especially loved her Kappa Delta sisters for whom she served as a national officer and colonized the chapter at The University of Texas at Austin in 1978 with a handful of other alumni. The Austin “Margarita Group” the “Beach Girls” her MD Anderson volunteer partners, her book club, her Mid Lane neighbors and, most recently, the 6/10s, all had a very special place in her heart.
She leaves behind many great memories of fun and good times, but most of all the experience of love for all who crossed her path. She is survived by her husband of fifty-six years, Mike Grimes, her only child, David Grimes, and wife, Windi, and her only grandchild and namesake, Martha Hall “Hallie” Grimes.
Friends are cordially invited to gather with the family and share remembrances of Martha during a reception to be held from five o’clock this afternoon until seven o’clock this evening, Thursday, the 11th of October, in the grand foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
The memorial service is to be conducted at two o’clock in the afternoon on Friday, the 12th of October at First Presbyterian Church, 5300 Main Street in Houston.
In lieu of customary remembrances, those desiring may direct memorial contributions in Martha’s name to the Kappa Delta Foundation, 3205 Players Lane, Memphis TN 38125, or MD Anderson Cancer Center, 1515 Holcombe Blvd, Houston, TX 77030.
