Marie Augusta Freeman Fischer passed away peacefully at her beloved home in Houston on Saturday, the 14th of May, 2022. She was born on the 16th of August 1931, in Laurens, South Carolina, to Augusta DeLorme Lezert Freeman and Edward Owen Freeman.
After many moves, she lived in Wilmette, Illinois where she graduated from New Trier High School and met her husband of 67 years, Stanton Pollard Fischer, MD. Marie attended Northwestern University and became a member of Chi Omega Fraternity, beginning a lasting relationship with the organization that provided her with friendships, fun times, and opportunities to serve her community.
As an Army wife, Marie lived in San Antonio, Texas, Fort Benning, Georgia, and explored Europe with her husband and family when stationed in Bremerhaven Germany. Her love of travel continued throughout her life; Marie and Stan visited all seven continents and generously included family members on many of these trips.
After settling in Houston in 1965, Marie became involved in a number of philanthropic organizations, including the Center for Pursuit, the Assistance League, and Chi Omega Alumni of Houston where she served in a number of capacities, holding almost every position on the Board.
Marie cherished family and education. As a lifelong learner, she encouraged her daughters to pursue undergraduate and graduate degrees. Most importantly, she was a loving and welcoming mother, not only to her family but also to her daughters’ many friends who became part of a large extended family. Annual summer family reunions in Bandera over a period of 27 years are another example of the value Marie and Stan placed on family, a value that was passed to their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Marie is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her daughter, Elizabeth Stanton Fischer Wallace; and her cherished dachshund, Bismarck.
She is survived by daughters Rebecca Marie Fischer of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Anne Fischer McCormack and her husband Daniel of Dallas; Suzanne Fischer Wendorf and her husband Thomas of San Antonio; and Marie Fischer Maurice and her husband Robert of Cypress; as well as fourteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
The family would like to express deep appreciation to Marie’s faithful and caring caregivers, Jamie, Lisa, Ipon, Zoila, and Marty. They would also like to extend their gratitude to Blanca for her many years of devoted service to the family.
A memorial service to celebrate Marie’s life is to be conducted at eleven o’clock in the morning on Monday, the 6th of June in the chapel of Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church, 11612 Memorial Drive, Houston, where Rev. Beth Case is to officiate.
Marie was grateful for the blessings she received, and believed in paying blessings forward.
In lieu of customary remembrances, memorial contributions may be directed to the Center for Pursuit, 4400 Harrisburg Boulevard, Houston, TX, 77011; Houston Food Bank, 535 Portwall Street, Houston, TX, 77029; the Smile Train [email protected], or the charity of one’s choice.
