Socorrito lived a life as daughter, wife, Mama, and Abuelita, touching the lives of many with her attentive, warm-hearted and kind spirit and generosity. Socorrito was born in Monterrey, Mexico on February 17, 1936 to Alfredo and Juanita de Luna. She was one of four children, her brother Alfredo who died before her, and is survived by her younger siblings Rolando de Luna y Marta Narro.
As a young woman, she lived in Monterrey and worked in the Insitututo de Technologia. A stunning beauty, she assisted her parents “en la tiendita,” and then met Jorge de la Riva one fateful spring day, marrying him that same year – where she began her life-long commitment to help and care for those in her life.
Married to the love of her life, Jorge de la Riva, she had seven children that included two sets of twins who she devoted her heart and energy to: Ana, Jorge, Carlos, Enrique, Barbara, Isabel y Fernando. She is also survived by three loving daughter-in-laws Debbie, Carrie and Ruth. Soon after moving from Mexico to Houston, Texas in the United States, her love lost a valiant fight and succumbed to cancer in 1982. Her reunion with her husband in Heaven above fills her family and friends with peace.
Socorrito showed a strength in mind, body and spirit in keeping her family together in a new country. Her strength was legendary throughout the world with family in Spain, Mexico, Brazil, Canada and elsewhere.
She was blessed to have been able to care for and guide not only her children but also her grandchildren. Her famous and delicious meals and wise and kind counsel were always sought after by them and she continued even until the last family gathering of Thanksgiving 2021 to inspire love and heartfelt kindness toward each other.
The spark of joy returned to her eyes with her first grandchild, and continued to grow with each of the total of ten grandchildren that she adored, fed, and doted on. She cherished all of her grandchildren: Cristina, Jorgito, Andres, Daniel, Paloma, Ricky, Luke, Jack, Annie and Nico. Her legacy of love shall live on with her children and grandchildren. Mami (Abuelita) had the wonderful ability to bring out the best in each of her children and grandchildren and her pride and joy grew year after year with their accomplishments and milestones. Her face beamed with pride as each de la Riva walked this earth having been made better by her love and kindness.
Through Socorrito’s love and devotion to family, the family gathered in love through Sunday get-togethers, birthdays, holidays, and every single other day in the calendar, you rarely if ever had a day without more than two de la Riva being together. That strength in family, that amazing bond, was forged not only through the heartache of having lost her true love, but through Socorrito’s unwavering and steadfast showing of love and support to each of her children and grandchildren.
She lived with her devoted and loving children Ana, Barbara and Fernando in Houston, and loved the many days of the week where her children and grandchildren would come visit.
The world truly lost a special soul but the light in Heaven and the sky will shine much brighter now that she has ascended to be with those that perished before her.
She shall be missed but more importantly, she shall be remembered and honored by everyone who was blessed enough to have been touched by her love.
Socorrito’s funeral service is scheduled on Monday, December 13, 2021 at noon at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church at 6646 Addicks Satsuma Rd., Houston, Texas 77084, the church where her grandchildren were baptized and confirmed, and where the family went to mass on Easter and Christmas.
Following the mass, a graveside ceremony will be held at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home & Cemetery on 13001 Katy Freeway, Houston, Texas 77079 at 2:00 p.m, with a reception in Towne Lake Union Kitchen at 3:30 p.m.
