Maria del Refugio Alatorre Jauregui, a mother known at the end of her life for her unrelenting humor and playfulness, died of kidney, heart, and blood pressure complications at the age of 77 at the Methodist Willowbrook hospital surrounded by her family.
She is survived by her children: Eliud, Itzia, Gabriela, Amilcar, Edmee, and Jorge. She is predeceased by her mother Consuelo and her son, Mauricio.
Maria was born in Guadalajara, Mexico on October 21, 1942, to Consuelo Jauregui and Jose Maria Alatorre. She enjoyed and often spoke about the work she did in the company Telefonos de Mexico. Her adventurous spirit led her to the United States early in her life, where she traveled and lived in many states, including Kansas, Illinois, California, and Texas. Along the way she often fell in love, had children, and eventually settled in the Lone Star state.
Maria was known for her hard-working etiquette, determination in the face of adversity, and her ability to make others laugh. She enjoyed singing, and at many points in her life, she sang and danced with several traveling groups in Mexico. Her talent in the kitchen was also admired by everyone who tasted any of the dishes she made. Her tamale and empanada recipes made her a household name in every neighborhood she lived in. She will be deeply missed by her friends, family, and all who knew her.
A funeral service is scheduled for 1pm on Saturday, November 16 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel on 10555 Mills Rd, Houston, TX 77070. A viewing is scheduled from 4pm to 8pm on Friday, November 15 at the Brookside Funeral home on 3410 Cypress Creek Pkwy, Houston, TX 77068.
