peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on January 25, 2022 at the age of 91. He will now join his wife Tommie as well as his parents and siblings in the Kingdom of God.
Manuel was the last living child born to Macario and Francisca Alvarez. He was born on July 15, 1930
in Runge, Texas, raised in Weslaco, Texas, and eventually planted his roots in Houston, Texas. He was a
true believer of the Christian faith. On October 15, 1950 he married Tommie Ruiz Alvarez. Together they raised two daughters and two sons.
Manuel lived a life well lived including his insatiable love as an avid hunter and fisherman and traveled
throughout the US and other countries. His favorite pastime was gambling in Las Vegas, Reno Mississippi, and Louisiana. He was happiest while bar-b-queing for family and friends and enjoyed
practical jokes, as well as sharing his past experiences with others. He never met a stranger and was always eager to carry a conversation. Manuel was a generous person with a big heart and wouldn’t think twice when assisting people in need. He associated with people from all levels of society and had
a unique ability to ascertain their perspective. He could always be seen wearing his Derby and cowboy boots - a true Texan.
As the son of migrant workers, he grew up with an unwavering work ethic and strength that became the
foundation for who he was as a man.
In his early years, he worked as a welder for the Port of Houston, a driver for Shamrock Hilton Hotel and as a warehouse manager for Harbison-Walker Refractories. He went on to become co-owner of K & A Trucking Co. Shortly afterward he branched out on his own forming Alvarez Trucking Co. He devoted himself to providing quality service and care to his clients. He made many lifelong friends throughout his career and regretted making the decision to retire. He will long be remembered for his service and devotion. He treated everyone with respect, kindness and genuine interest.
Although the picture of health for most of his life, he experienced health problems in his last years. Throughout it all, he maintained his bright smile, sense of humor and positive attitude.
Manuel is preceded in death by his wife Tommie, his parents, as well as his siblings. He leaves to mourn
his passing, his wife Alvina, his children: Belinda (Ernest Galindo), Cynthia (Saul Vega), Manuel “Pops” (Lisa) and Rick (Elsa). His grandchildren, Saul III, Manuel (Popsie), Cristobal G, Rick V, Marc G, Kristy S, Jenna V-H, Adrian A, Ricky A, Justin A, and Joseph A. As well as 28 great-grandchildren and his
loving cousins, nieces and nephews.
Due to the various Covid-19 variants, the family has planned a private Celebration of Life.
We thank all family and friends for their prayers and support.
