Luberta Harper was born August 03, 1926 to Tommy and Mattie Phillips in Scottsville, TX. She was the second of 11 children. She graduated high school and went on to attend Wiley College. There she was enrolled in the Cosmetology Program. She received her Diploma in 1945.
Later, Luberta, along with her 2 children, Sherman and Mattie, moved to Houston, TX. Here she met and married Hezekiah Harper. Three children were born of this union, Joseph, Ella Ruth and Rita. Mrs. Harper also gained another daughter from this union, Vera McDaniel. It was during the growth years of her family; she became affectionately known as “Lou.”
After the passing of Hezekiah, she continued to care and guide her family. It was during this season that she gained the titles of “Madear” and “Granny.”
Later in life she married Elder Earnest Johnson. She stood by his side and aided him in the guidance of Gospel Chapel Church of God in Christ. After the loss of Earnest, she joined Outreach Ministries under the guidance of Pastor Keith.
She was a social ambassador. Lou was a volunteer at Mission Yahweh. She never met a stranger. She would often visit Trinity Gardens Church of Christ where she gained more family. She was outspoken and
outgoing. She gave credence to the term “Social Butterfly.” Lou was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; 3 children, Vera, Joseph, and Rita; 4 sisters and 5 brothers.
She leaves behind to share her story: son, Sherman (Anita); daughters, Mattie and Ella Ruth; brother, John Earl; 22 grandchildren, a number of great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. And a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A visitation for Luberta will be held Tuesday, November 19, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Trinity Garden Church-Christ, 7725 Sandra St, Houston, TX 77016. The funeral will immediately follow from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM. The committal service will be held following services from 1:00 PM to 1:30 PM at Golden Gate Cemetery, 8400 Hirsch Rd, Houston, TX 77016.
