In Cameron, Texas on February 5, 1941, the union of Lonnie Johnson Sr. and Legalia Williams-Johnson was blessed with a baby boy Lonnie Johnson Junior. Being raised in a Christian home, Lonnie attended Lights Chapel Baptist Church and Cameron Grove Baptist Church. The virtues of integrity, arduous work, responsibility, self-discipline were all instilled in him by his parents at a youthful age.
Lonnie proudly attended O.J. Thomas High School in Cameron, Texas where he would equip himself with the necessary tools for success, and would later enter the United States Air Force after graduation. He went on to serve his country for twenty years, retiring in 1980 as a Tech. Sergeant. After retirement, Lonnie worked as an electrician and would later go on to become a long-distance truck driver for four years at Hughes Drilling Services. Lonnie later retired again in 2004 as a United States Postal Service truck driver. He then became a “full-timer” traveling and exploring the country in his R.V with his wife Clara Jenkins-Johnson until she was called to be with the Lord on February 23, 2010. On November 12, 2011, after over 50 years of being apart he reunited with and married Minnie Nell Sledge-Dalton.
Lonnie, a devoted traveler, was a member of several R.V. clubs including The Texas Rollers R.V. Club, The Discovery Texans, and The Texas Sojourners R.V. club where he spent many of his days on the road in his pride and joy, his Fleetwood Discovery R.V. up until 2021.
Being a strong, practical, reliable, loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and cousin, Lonnie was the epitome of a what you call a family man, and was a stalwart of a man to his loved ones. Although he will no longer dwell with us in body, his memories shall abide with us forever, and though we will miss him unfathomably, his great legacy continues to live on deep within every heart he touched. May every memory of him shine deep within us and continue to be a beacon of hope and reassurance during these times.
Lonnie received his home going call on Thursday July 27, 2023. He leaves his loving and caring wife of 12 years, Nell Johnson; his sister, Lucinda Canady; his beloved daughters, Pamela (Charles), Benita (Larry), Elaine, and Patricia; his sons, Paul and Teddy; grandchildren, Aquera, Christian, Charles II, Jordan, Marquise, Shemar, Skyla, and Lonnie III; great-grandchildren, Huriayya, Londyn, Aubrey, Jordan Jr., and Noor; many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends to celebrate his love and legacy.
Just the other day I had a talk with my Lord. He said “Servant your earthly journey has come to an end. You have said goodbye to your loved ones, you have fought a good fight and have kept faith in Me. Your home on high is ready. It is a home in Heaven not made by man’s hands.”
A memorial service for Lonnie will be held Saturday, August 12, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Earthman Resthaven, 13102 North Fwy, Houston, TX 77060.
