Loella Elizabeth Nabors Madison passed away early Wednesday morning, the 11th of December 2013, surrounded by loving family members. At 93 years old she succumbed to cancer although her spirit and faith remained strong.
Elizabeth Nabors was born on the 16th of September 1920, in Nashville, Tennessee, to Walter Victor and Ethel Mae Nabors. She was the fourth daughter of a family of eight girls and three boys and proudly the last survivor. She was a devout Baptist, a dedicated teacher, a loving daughter, wife, mother, and greatly devoted and beloved grandmother.
She is survived by daughters, Beth Madison of Houston, Vickie Madison Barrett and her husband Dr. Steven Barrett of Orlando, FL; three grandchildren, Steven Madison Barrett of Orlando, FL, Keely Lane Madison of Kyle, TX, and Lindsay Carol Madison of Houston; and great grandson, Lane Madison of Kyle, TX. She is predeceased by her husband, Fines; her son, Reginald Tulane Madison and daughter Peggy Jane Madison.
On the 22nd of January 1942, Elizabeth married Fines Malcolm Madison, a chemical engineer and graduate of Oklahoma University. They were married for 53 years. They lived and raised their family in Oklahoma and Texas as Fines transferred positions in the energy field.
Elizabeth moved to Houston to be near her children in February of 2002.
Following her aunts and older sisters, Elizabeth graduated from Oklahoma College for Women in May of 1942 and was an enthusiastic educator for most of the remainder of her life. She loved being with youth and always sought a high road to her traditional code of ethics, but managed to chuckle at constant tests to her authority. Throughout her life she found joy in many of the relationships she developed from those experiences.
She believed actions spoke louder than words and remained a concerned and good friend to her neighbors in the Forum at Memorial Woods during the past 12 years. Kindness, generosity and courtesy to others was her lifelong mantra.
She will be missed but her value and spirit will long be treasured and shared.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five o’clock this afternoon until seven o’clock this evening, Friday, the 13th of December, in the parlor and grand foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
A funeral service is to be conducted at two o’clock in the afternoon on Saturday, the 14th of December, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons.
Interment is to follow, via an escorted cortege, at Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery in Houston.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions be directed to the Loella Elizabeth Madison Scholarship fund, which was established in 2008 by Beth Madison in her mother’s honor at the USAO Foundation, 1727 W. Alabama, Chickasha, OK, 73018. Checks should be made payable to the USAO Foundation with reference to the Loella Elizabeth Madison Scholarship.
