She was the daughter of John and Frances Wheelan, born in Hannibal, Missouri. She had many fond memories of long weekends camped out by the river with her family as a child. Later the family moved to Bryan, Texas where Linda was raised.
Education played a heavy hand in her upbringing, influenced by her father that she adored. Having an older brother Denny, she was raised a bit of a tomboy and always told a story of how she could shoot better than her brother who was a career military man who attained the rank of Colonel in the United States Army. Linda loved her mother "Frankie", while only 4 feet 11 inches was the ultimate "Mama Bear" protector.
Growing up in the late 50's was sheer joy for Linda, she graduated from High School in 1960 from Bryan High School and went on to earn her Bachelor of Education degree in only 3 years from Sam Houston State University in 1963. She moved to Houston for a teaching job that year and what a great year 1963 was for her as she met both her best friend Harriet Mills and her future husband Bob Mauldin.
She married Bob on February 27, 1965 and he was the love of her life. Bob passed away in March of 1999, but he and Linda shared a beautiful life together over those 34 years. They raised 2 beautiful children in Amy and Bobby in the Champions area and Linda still lived in their house they bought in 1978 till the day that she joined Bob in heaven. She so loved her children and shared such a special bond with each of them. She so enjoyed her many daily conversations with Amy, talking about everything and nothing. No one and I mean no one made Linda laugh as easily or as often as "Baby Bobby".
Over the years, but particularly after Bob passed, Linda's motto became "Have purse, will travel". When Amy and her family moved to Paris for 2 years, Linda was far and away their most frequent guest.
Linda was dependable, loyal and trustworthy and the kind of person that radiated sincerity and kindness. When she made friends, she made true and lasting friendships. Ernie and Harriet Mills were her dear friends her entire adult life and later on she developed dear friendships with Peggie Ney, Diane Spear, Carol Hickam, Gail Lockwood, Susan Terrell, Rosemary Robinson, Margaret Gleason, Nanci Kelly, Jane Ryan, Bev Secrest and many others.
Linda's primary occupation was educator/teacher. She was employed for over 3 decades by Cy-Fair School District, starting her career at Yeager Elementary School and finishing as Assistant Principal at Copeland Elementary School. Linda was so passionate about education and particularly young teachers that after retirement she spent 13 years as an Adjunct Professor for student teachers through Texas A&M.
Linda was a dog lover her entire life and leaves behind her dear Annie, a Goldendoodle who has been her companion for the last 6 years. Linda's greatest love of all was for her 6 grandchildren. She attended so many recitals, contests, games, matches and graduations that we have lost count. She was so proud of Meredith, Luke, Mackenzie, Timothy, Morgan and Tanner, not so much for their accomplishments but for the persons they turned out to be. They loved their "Mimi" so much and she loved them with all that she had to give.
Linda was a faithful daughter, a loving and supportive wife, a Mama bear when it came to her children and a cream puff when it came to her grandchildren. Maybe most of all Linda was a fantastic friend and a tremendous human being. WE will miss you sweet Linda, heaven is a better place today.
Linda is survived by her daughter Amy and her husband Tom; son, Bobby and his wife Melissa; her adored and treasured grandchildren Meredith, Luke and Mackenzie Ryan and Timothy, Morgan and Tanner Mauldin.
