Linda Tautenhahn Ledbetter passed away peacefully at home on Monday the 8th of January 2024. Linda, a native Houstonian, was born on the 10th of February 1945. She was immensely proud that in 1912, architect William Ward Watkin commissioned her grandfather, master stone carver Oswald J. Lassig, to sculpt much of the original reliefs at Rice Institute (University). Mr. Lassig’s work also lives on at Rice, Trinity Episcopal Church, the limestone altar at Holy Rosary Church, the original Museum of Fine Arts Building, The Rice Hotel, the Julia Ideson Houston Public Library Building, and the Esperson Buildings and cupola, to name a few. This special connection with her hometown was the foundation for a life-long love affair with our city.
Linda attended Spring Branch High School, the University of Texas at Austin, and the University of Houston. She was a long-time real estate agent for Madeline O’Brien, Inc. Realtors, and was an agent at Heritage Texas Properties when she retired. She particularly loved the challenge of marketing a difficult home listing, and working with buyers to find “that perfect house.” Her excitement about helping her clients, using her experience to smoothly close property transactions, and mentoring new agents made Linda’s career extremely satisfying, as did the many friendships she fostered with her colleagues.
Linda was previously a member of the Harris County Medical Women’s Auxiliary, The Bluebird Circle, and the St. Luke’s Methodist Church Wedding Guild. Volunteering for these groups was a real pleasure for her, and she enjoyed every minute she spent with them. She was a member of River Oaks Country Club, River Oaks Blossom Club, Tanglewood Garden Club, the ROCC Readers, Friday Book Club, and St. Luke’s Methodist Church until her death. Her ladies’ golf group, Chix ‘n Stix, however, might have been her favorite membership of all.
Linda’s loving husband, Abbe A. Ledbetter, M.D., and her sister, Marilyn Ables, predeceased her. Her daughter and son-in-law, Heather Ledbetter Kearney and husband Wayne, and her two grandchildren, John Stuart Anthony Faulkner and Bridget Elise Kearney, survive her. Linda was incredibly proud of Heather and Wayne, and of the family they created. She was an adoring grandmother, and particularly enjoyed family celebrations and holidays where everyone gathered together.
A memorial service is to be conducted at three o’clock in the afternoon on Friday, the 12th of January, in the sanctuary of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, 3471 Westheimer Road in Houston. Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the nearby Fellowship Hall to celebrate Linda’s life.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family suggests directing memorial contributions honoring Linda to the Houston Humane Society, 14700 Almeda Road, Houston, TX 77053 or to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, 1220 Holcombe Blvd, Houston, TX 77030.
