LESLIE CLETUS BROWN III passed away on February 19, 2023, in Houston, Texas. Cletus III was born in Houston on August 4, 1952, to Leslie Cletus Brown Jr. and Betty Showers Brown. He attended Katy High School and Schreiner Institute Military Academy Preparatory School, graduating in 1970. He went on to study business and graduated from the University of Houston-Downtown.
Cletus III met the love of his life, Ann Lacy Brown, on the Kokernot o6 Ranch, and they married on August 5, 1978. Together, they raised three children.
Cletus III helped with the Boy Scouts and was involved with his church, Brookshire First United Methodist Church. Later he was also active at Christ Church Cathedral. He also served on several community boards and was active in his children’s schools. He and Ann enjoyed many trips to the ranch with family and friends. They also enjoyed country and western dancing.
Cletus III leaves behind a legacy of integrity, solidarity, hard work, compassion, and caring that was bestowed on relatives and friends who received many blessings, thanks to his values and the love he passed on. He was a proud law-abiding Texan and mentor who loved history, books, and fishing. Cletus III was happiest when he was working for his mother on the Brown family farm and spending time with her.
Cletus III will be remembered as a larger-than-life man whose spontaneous smile and infectious laugh made an incredible impact on every heart he touched. He was a kind and generous soul with a positive attitude who always believed everything was going to work out for the best.
Cletus III is survived by a loving family and many friends. He was “Popi” to his children and grandchildren. We know that he is rejoicing in heaven with those who preceded him in death: his father Leslie Cletus Jr., his brother Edward Showers Brown, and his sister Betty Ann Brown Davis, as well as many beloved friends and relatives.
Cletus III is survived by his loving wife Ann Lacy Brown, his mother Betty Showers Brown, his sister Kathy Armstrong Lang and her husband Danny, and Cletus and Ann’s children: Leslie Cletus “Cuatro” Brown IV and his wife Meaghan Frazier Brown; Edward Showers Brown II, his wife Stephanie Greenfield Brown, and their children Hannah and Meyer; and Lucile Cooper Lacy Brown-LaPoint, her husband Michael LaPoint, and their children Rixon and Everitt.

Cletus will be revered in heaven for his love of horseback riding and working cattle for his mother, the Kokernot o6 Ranch, and many other ranches, which gave him fodder for his many marvelous stories. In honor of his appreciation for the life of the cowboy, we share this excerpt from the Cowboy Prayer:
Our Heavenly Father, we pause at this time, mindful of the many blessings you have bestowed upon us. We ask, Lord, that you will be with us in this life. We ask that you help us to compete in life as honestly as the horses we ride and in a manner as clean and pure as the wind that blows across this great land of ours. Help us, Lord, to live our lives in such a manner that when we make that last inevitable ride to the country up there, where the grass grows lush, green, and stirrup-high, and the water runs cool, clear, and deep, you will take us by the hand…
Amen
