On Monday April 29, 2013 Larry went to meet his savior Jesus Christ. Larry was born, May 15, 1952, and raised in Ponca City, Oklahoma. Larry went to Oklahoma State University and received a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry. Larry worked for Dowell in Research and Development in Tulsa Oklahoma from 1974-1980. While living in Tulsa, Larry’s first son was born, Lonnie Kirk Moran. Larry transferred to Midland, Texas in 1980 and worked for Dowell and Dowell Schlumberger from 1980-1985 as a Regional Engineer. While living in Midland, Larry’s second son was born, Landon Keith Moran. In 1985 Larry left Dowell Schlumberger and went to work for Conoco in Ponca City, Oklahoma from 1985 to 1994 as a research scientist. Larry transferred to Houston with Conoco in 1994 and worked in the worldwide drilling engineering group as a cementing specialist from 1994-1997. Larry changed assignments within Conoco and became a drilling rig supervisor from 1997-2004. As a drilling rig supervisor Larry supervised drilling operation offshore Gulf of Mexico, South Texas land operation in the Lobo field, Northwest New Mexico land operations drilling Dakota wells, and offshore Indonesia in the South Natuna Sea. When Conoco and Phillips merged Larry was transferred back to Houston as a worldwide Cementing specialist. Larry continued in this job until retiring from ConocoPhillips in 2009. Larry retired with 24 years of service from ConocoPhillips in 2009. After retirement Larry consulted as a cementing specialist for several domestic oil and gas companies and internationally for Qatar Petroleum. Larry stopped consulting in the upstream oil business after he was diagnosed with upper gastrointestinal cancer in early 2012.
Larry was an active member of API and ISO for many years and helped to write many of the current cementing recommended laboratory practices. Larry is the holder of multiple US and foreign patents. Larry published multiple papers dealing with cementing of oil and gas wells.
Larry is survived by his wife, Betty; parents, Leo and Marietta, an older brother, Landreth, and Landreth’s daughter, Michelle Berry-Engle. Larry is also survived by his two sons, Lonnie and Landon; his two step children, Tracy Fryar and Shane Harless, and six grandchildren, Logan Fryar, Austin Fryar, Cassie Harless, Brodie Harless, Lucas Moran, and Jarred Moran.
Larry was a member of Memorial Church of Christ in Houston.
Larry’s family and friends gathered at a visitation at Waltrip Funeral Directors, 1415 Campbell Road in Houston, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 1, 2013. Larry’s funeral was conducted in the chapel of Waltrip Funeral Directors on Thursday, May 2, 2013 at 11:30 a.m., Mr. Larry Phillips of Memorial Church of Christ officiated. Family and friends celebrated Larry’s life and his eternal future.
