Larry Anthony Martin was born into this world on December 18, 1954 to the proud parents of John and Dorothy Martin in Houston, Texas. He was the eldest of two children from this union. He grew up in the neighborhood of Pleasantville and made an array of friends throughout his adolescent years that carried over into his adult life. He attended Ebert L. Furr Sr. High School and graduated in 1973. From there he ventured out to pursue his collegiate years in Denver, Colorado, but soon returned home to finish his education at the University of Houston.
Then came the year, 1976 and he decided to take the test to hire on at the United States Postal Service, HE PASSED, and well, he never looked back. Between the new job and his new love, God put it on his mind to marry a beautiful woman by the name of Sandra Roundtree and he changed her last name on August 12, 1978. The two enjoyed their time as newlyweds and four years later God blessed this union with twins, a boy and a girl, Jared and Sherronda Martin. He was very present in their lives, you could always find him at one of their many extra curricular activities. He was their biggest cheerleader and the same goes for all their friends.
Larry was a great father, a great husband, but most importantly he served the LORD. He attributes his strong belief in Christ to the many lessons taught by His, Father in Christ, the late great Bishop R. L. Finney, Sr., founder of Grace Congregational Church. He kept his family active in the church and instilled much of what he learned into his children. He continued to serve the Lord as a member of Greater Vision Church.
Larry retired from the United States Postal Service in March of 2017 after serving 41 years and 5 months as a Letter Carrier. He served all his patrons with integrity and compassion over the years on Route 4701 and 4707. He was able to celebrate his years worked and as they say “receive his flowers” while he was amongst the living at his retirement party in August of 2017.
He was proceeded in death by his father, John Martin, his sister Kathy Williams (husband Gregory Williams, Sr.), and his grandmother Katherine Johnson. He leaves to cherish his memory, his mother, Dorothy Martin, his loving wife, Sandra Martin, his children Jared Martin and Sherronda Phelps-Martin, his two beautiful granddaughters Kaylee and Terra and his loving nieces and nephews Eric(Wayland), Katrina(Tiaira), Kimberly(Kimora & Holden), April(Chason & Amor) and Gregory(Gia & Genesis). Larry was a well loved person and will be missed immensely by all he touched in his lifetime!
