L. DON SLAYTON of Deer Park, Texas, passed away November 15, 2024. Don was born September 11, 1938 in Lindale, Texas to Jesse Lillard and Ethel Allen Slayton. Member of Jacques DeMolay #1390 AF & AM. Also member of J. W. Chandler #1452 AF & AM. Endowed member of Scottish Rite, 32 degree KCCH and endowed member of Arabia Shrine, Houston, Texas. DON held many offices and staff positions in Arabia Shrine. In 2014 he was honored to serve as Potentate of Arabia Temple.
Retired from President of Thomas Lumber Supply and Slayco Tool & Rentals. Before the expression was ever used, he started the business of "flipping houses" in Harris, Mason, Smith and Colorado counties.
He enjoyed bowling and visiting Louisiana. Coushatta mostly.
But his main love was hunting, mostly the camaraderie and fellowship.
He was preceded in death by his father, Jesse Lillard Slayton and mother and stepfather, Ethe; Allen Slayton Butler and Finis C. Butler; his brother, Charles Slayton and wife Lea of Dallas, Texas. Also preceded in death by his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Faye & Lester Newbill; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Delores and James McAllister. Preceded in death also is son-in-law, Jay Shiffler; Also, cousin "big sister" Sue McMillan and husband Bobby of New Chappell Hill, Texas.
Don is survived by his wife of 37 years, Debra Newbill Slayton, of Deer Park, Texas; daughters, D. Ann Shiffler of Georgetown, Texas and DeLisa Strege and husband Jeff of Houston. Grandchildren: Kendall Guinn and husband Andrew of Austin, Texas; Bailey Larson and husband Brett of Pasadena, California; Olivia (Leo) Strege of College Station, Texas and Keith Strege of Houston. Great-grandchildren: Annabelle and Callahan Guinn of Austin, Texas. Also surviving are sisters Diana Williams and husband Danny of Covington, Louisiana; and Lanell Butler of Greenwell Springs, Louisiana. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends. Also survived by his dear companion, J. R. IV.
A visitation for L. Don will be held Sunday, November 24, 2024 from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home, 6900 Lawndale Street, Houston, TX 77023. A funeral service will occur Monday, November 25, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, 6900 Lawndale Street, Houston, TX 77023. A committal service will occur Monday, November 25, 2024 from 12:00 PM to 12:55 PM, 6900 Lawndale Street, Houston, TX 77023.
