Karl Franklin “Bubba” McLean was born April 25, 1937 in Kerrville, TX to Frank and Johanna (Kittle) McLean. As a child, Bubba, his parents and two sisters moved to Deer Park, TX where he spent the majority of his life. The city of Deer Park and even more, the Deer Park School District, was loved by Bubba. He enjoyed a successful school and sports career in high school. Bubba received many athletic honors as an individual in football, basketball and track. In each he was recognized as an all-state athlete. Surpassing, however, those individual honors were the two state 1A football championships won in 1954 and 1955. Ole Bub loved Deer Park football and could easily recall teammates and the teams they defeated on their way to championships. Two coaches, Shorty Hughes (football) and Cotton Watkins (basketball) influenced Bubba greatly. He spoke throughout his life of their influence as coaches but also helping him grow into a man. Bubba’s athletic ability allowed him to leave Deer Park where he once again excelled. He became a Junior College All-American at Tyler Junior College in Tyler, TX. Bubba then went on to Texas A&M University to play football.
Bubba met Sharon Weeden in 1963. They married on November 12, 1965 in Houston, TX. In 1967, they welcomed their first son, Chad and their second son, Brad, in 1971. Bubba and family settled in Deer Park where he worked in the petrochemical industry for the next 40 years.
In 1984, Bubba reengaged with the Deer Park School District through winning election to the school board. He was truly overwhelmed and thrilled that he could now serve the school district that gave him so much. Bubba served as a school board member for 17 years. He loved Deer Park and Deer Park schools. Along with his service to the school district, Bubba was a long-time member of both First Baptist Church Deer Park and First Baptist Church Pasadena, TX and most recently a member of West Conroe Baptist Church.
Karl Franklin “Bubba” McLean passed from this life and entered eternally in the presence of Jesus on July 3, 2018 at 81 years of age. Trusting Jesus as Savior and Lord for the forgiveness of his sins as a teenager, Bubba lived with a living hope. His family will miss his presence. Bubba rarely missed an opportunity to support his children and grandchildren in their activities.
Bubba is survived by his wife of 53 years, Sharon (and Max, his dog); two sons, Chad and wife Jennifer; Brad and wife Holly; four grandchildren, Chad, Jeremia and wife Megan, David Andrew and Lauren; one great-grandchild, Colt; two sisters, Daisy Dishongh and Hanna West and husband Gary; two brothers-in-law, Michael Weeden and H.J.
