Karen was born on April 22, 1948, to Martha Wicker Coker and L.O. (Jim) Coker in Greenville, Texas. Karen attended Greenville schools where she excelled in voice and vocal choirs, qualifying numerous times for Texas’ All State Choirs. After high school, Karen attended East Texas University in Commerce, Texas where she was an active member of Kappa Delta. Upon graduation, Karen began her lifelong dream of teaching. In 1974, she attended the University of Montana where she received her Master’s degree in Education.
Karen initially started her teaching career in the Greenville Independent School District. Throughout her career, she taught in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Missoula, Montana – and after returning to Texas to reside in Houston – Karen taught at Second Baptist School and Youens Elementary. Her love of teaching was foremost in her life. Many children’s lives have been touched by this very gracious lady.
Karen also fostered a great appreciation of theatre, film, dance and literature. This passion for the arts was always evident in her personality and actions, most notably when given the opportunity to share these wonders with children.
Karen was a member of Wesley Methodist Church as a child in Greenville. After moving to Houston, her church affiliation was at Westchase Methodist. She was active in the choirs of both churches.
Karen will be sorely missed by those she leaves behind. She is survived by her son, Grady Hunt, her sister and brother-in-law, Jimmye Sue and Russell Clem, her niece and family, Carrie, Steve and Hannah Martin and Henry Hunt, dear friend and former husband. Karen has been a wonderful daughter, mother, sister, friend, and Aunt K to all of them.
