Judy Agnes Elrod, age 78, of Splendora, Texas went to be with the Lord on December 14, 2024. Judy was born on September 6, 1946, in Houston, Texas to parents, Glenn Curtis Spangler and Agnes Edna (Parker) Spangler.
Throughout her life, when her family, friends or even strangers needed it, she exhibited courage beyond belief, compassion and sacrifice beyond measure, faith that could not be shaken. This led multiple family members to quickly come to the same realization upon her passing: we have lost our matriarch. That is how we saw her, and she served that role for decades. Never wanting the spotlight and at the same time never shying away from what needed to be done to protect, guide, support, mentor, and above all love her family and friends.
Her grandchildren cherish the memory of her serving as the AWANA secretary in church and her crazy claw machine skills that meant a constant supply of stuffed animals for them. When her grandchildren grew out of stuffed animals, she would still win them and give them to well-behaved children she observed in the store.
We also must note Judy’s love for animals. Some of her fondest memories were from riding horses at her uncle and aunt’s farm as a girl. If she ever saw an animal suffering, she would act. If she took them to the SPCA she would pay to have the vet work done to get them ready for adoption. Of course, she would often start crying before getting the animal to the SPCA, turn around and just add another one to the family. Her “senior kitty” of 14 years was rarely far from her in the house.
Losing her seems like a burden too heavy to bear, but we will do it just like she taught us, together.
Her life is an inspiration and guiding light that will last generations. All who came to know her will miss her dearly.
Judy is preceded in death by her mother, father, late husband (the father of her 3 boys) 50 years ago, and two brothers.
She is survived by all those who loved, adored, and cherished her. She leaves behind, her loving husband of 44 years, Thomas Duane Elrod; three sons, to whom she was their mother, their father, their everything; step-son; daughters-in-law; one brother; sisters-in-law; nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, as well as a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
A visitation for Judy will be held Friday, December 27, 2024 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Brookside Funeral Home, 13747 Eastex Freeway, Houston, TX 77039. A funeral service will occur Saturday, December 28, 2024 at 11:00 AM, in Brookside’s Grand Oak Chapel with interment to follow at Brookside Memorial Park.
