Jose Gerardo Mendez Jr was born in Houston, Texas on February 27, 2005 to parents Jose Gerardo Mendez and Roxann Salinas. Jose passed away on January 17, 2023 at the age of 17, following a 2-year battle with cancer. Despite his conditions, he was really strong through it all and remained brave through the end.
Jose was known by his family as JJ or Chepe. He liked to collect Hot Wheels, DVDs, McDonald’s Happy Meal Toys and stuffed animals. His favorite thing to do was open the Hot Wheels packages and display them in his room (Jose’s Room is what he would say). His favorite movies were Robots, Panyo, Bee Movie, and Monsters Inc. He had a laugh that could fill a room and it was so genuine and hard that it came from his belly. San Antonio was his favorite place to go and stopping at Bucc-ees for a red Icee and Bucc-ees shirt on the way was a must. Morgan’s Wonderland (Butterfly Park as he calls it) was his favorite place to go. He also liked the San Antonio Zoo. If you were to ask him if he wanted anything he would tell you Dr. Pepper, Crawfish (shrimp crab), and Chick-Fil-A. He liked going to the movies but we think he just liked the bucket of popcorn. He may have lost one of his legs to cancer, but that didn’t stop him from driving the racecar games at Dave N Busters. Another favorite place of his was Grandmas House. He would make himself at home all while taking over her bed.
Jose is survived by his parents Jose Gerardo Mendez and Roxann Salinas, Sister Gabriela Mendez, Brother Gabriel Mendez, Grandparents Jose Mendez, Juanita De La Cruz, Ester Ortiz, Ralph Ortiz, Martin Salinas, and Mary Salinas. Uncles Martin Salinas, Juan Salinas, Marcus Salinas, Raul Mendez. Aunts Aurora Mendez, Maria Mendez, Irene Mendez, Perla Mendez, Elise Salinas, Jessica Ortiz, Jennifer Ortiz, and Brittany Ortiz. And of course, all 28 cousins.
He will truly be missed and loved by his entire family and anyone who had the honor of knowing him.
A visitation for Jose will be held on Friday, January 20, 2023 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, followed by a chapel service at 6:00 PM.
