John Sargent Fischer died peacefully, surrounded by his family on Tuesday, December 23, 2014 in Houston, Texas. He was born on April 20, 1928 in New Orleans, Louisiana to Frederick Hall Fischer and Evelyn Sargent Waters.
John received a BS in physics from Tulane University in 1950. He served in the US Army at the Ballistics Research Laboratories at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland and at the US Atomic Test Site in Nevada. He worked for Schlumberger Well Services for 21 years and the Dia-Log Company for four years before becoming an independent well-log consultant, conducting over 100 industry schools and seminars on various aspects of well log usage and interpretation. He wrote several papers on well log usage and held a patent involving wire line formation testing. He was a member of the Society of Professional Well Log Analysts and the Society of Petroleum Engineers of AIME.
As a student at Tulane, John joined Alpha Tau Omega. While living in New Orleans he was a member of the Society of the War of 1812 and the Society of Colonial Wars. A life-long sailor, be belonged to Lakewood Yacht Club in Seabrook, Texas. He was a former member of St. Michael’s Catholic Community where he served as president of the parish council.
John was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Frederick and his daughter Mary Evelyn “Emmy” Bryant. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ann Potter Fischer; daughter Conway Fischer Adams and her husband Charles; sons John Sargent Fischer, Jr. and his wife Jennifer and Stephen Potter Fischer and his wife Beth; grandchildren John Adams, William Adams and his wife Allison Shaw, Elizabeth Gonzalez and her husband Michael, Thomas Adams, Benjamin Bryant, Morgan Fischer, Anna Fischer, Christian Fischer, Evelyn Fischer and Benjamin Wick; and great grandson John Fischer Gonzalez.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at 10:00 AM at All Saints Catholic Church, 215 East 10th Street, Houston, Texas 77008. His grandsons will serve as pallbearers. A private graveside service will be held for the family at a later date. For those so wishing, donations may be made in John’s memory to All Saints Catholic Community or St. Thomas High School, 4500 Memorial Drive, Houston, Texas 77007.
